i hate my IDI and want more power how do i put a Cummins in my truck?:D

No i actually like my IDI, so much i want one in my 79 CJ-7 Jeep. I know I mentioned this before but does anyone know anyone who has done this before that can point me in there direction to pick there brains. I want to get some resurch down before i start torching stuff apart. i did some rough measurment and it will be a tight fit but i think i can make it work. i am most worried at this point about my steering shaft.

i have a late 70's scout t-18 from a v-8 can i bolt this right to a IDI? if so that should take care of the adapters because it has the right transfer case hanging off the back already.

dont worry i already assume on upgrading the springs and axles, not worried so much about that yet. my frame is fully boxed but i am sure i will at least add more cross braces. i dont plan on towing more than a utility trailer i just love diesel and the torque should be great for off road.

I would appreciate any help thanks.

Time permitting I can come up and give you dumb looks while my truck marks your driveway.:D :rotflmao

Mel and the Bronco is about the closest we get to a conversion to an IDI.

Sounds like a cool project!! Be sure to document it ;Sweet

IIRC the bellhousing-to-engine bolt pattern is different, even without the Ford adapter in place. That said, the Ford IDI bellhousing MIGHT bolt on to the Scout T-18. Also, is the tranny input shaft (diameter, spline count, etc.) the same between the two?

Just some things to think about...does the Jeep have a hydraulic clutch? If not, adapting one might be a good idea...

Just some thoughts...good luck!! Can't wait to see the finished product...

thanks for the offers, i might need help moving around all that pig iron.

can anyone give me the spline count, size length or anything else of a ford diesel input shaft to compare to the one in my garage?

i plan on updating to a hydrolic clutch, i wouldent have to worry about mechanical alignment then. this will be a long project but i will document and show off as i go.

ouch, that is a lot of nose weight in a CJ-7....You might want to look into that before you go thought the trouble.Gonna need to beef up the front springs and frame rails....

The cheapest way to swap a 4BT or 4BTA is to find an old complete bread truck, then you have most everything you need......If you can wrench on an IDI, you'll find an inline Cummins easy to work on.

Those little 3.9 liter 4 bangers can put out alot of power, I know a couple guys around here with them in 6000 lb Dodge Military M-37 3/4 ton trucks and they scoot pretty good. They could accelerate to 70 faster than my '03 F-150 with the 4.6 V-8 in it;Sweet

If no one else is able to get you the info, I've got a T-19 sitting in storage I can measure for you. However, between my work schedule and preparing to move, I don't know when I'll be able to get over there...hopefully in the next few weeks  or hopefully someone will have one more readily available...

I'll go out right now and look at the input shaft on the '88.

Ok 1.25 inches and 10 splines

Mont, your '88 is a ZF5, right?

I don't know about the input shaft itself, but the outer collar (that the throwout bearing rides on) on a ZF is considerably thicker than on the T-19. I found this out the hard way when I wanted to adapt a T-19 greasable TO bearing to my ZF conversion. :(
