Did I screw up??

So the good news is that I mated the trans up this evening. Only took me 30 minutes or so struggling with it. Considering how long it's been since I did one I'll call that a win. I remembered the throw out bearing but I left the fork out. Hence the question.

Will it go in without sliding the trans back?

I needs cleaned up yet. So I hadn't put it in place. Looking at the clip on the back of it, I'm not sure it will go.

I replaced the throw out fork in mine without taking the trans out but it's a 4 speed

Yeah fork can slide in afterward.

Edit. I was a 4 speed also.

IDIoit says it won't go based on first hand experience.

I ordered a new one. The points were pretty worn on it so I figured for $20 why not. Be here Tuesday.

After I posted I wondered about that. The ZF has a larger input shaft so thus a larger OD and less room to over insert the fork to get it seated on the ball.

New clutch fork is a good idea. I had one that was worn and it let the throughout bearing spin on the tranny input sleeve and ended up breaking the input off the front of the transmission. The 4-speed then got a rebuild and new clutch.

Well sucks its got to come back out, but good thing you thought of it now!

it just need to be slid back a bit, doesn't need to come all the way off.

So what do I do, slide it back far enough to get the TO bearing off? I'm guessing the TO bearing as to come forward to the point the fork will go around it and clear the clip to slide back onto the ball. That sound about right?

shouldn't have to take the TO bearing off.
with the trans pulled away, you should be able to sneak it inbetween both.

For the record, I don't think you would absolutely have to pull the trans back, but it would be a lot tougher. Nice to be able to reach up from the bottom to help line things up.

I tried my hardest to get it in without moving the trans back.

I don't know. When I say it could be done I mean if unless I were in a position where it was impossible to slide the trans back (roadside repair) I'd slide the trans back. Getting it all lined up through the clutch fork hole would be really tough if at all possible.

I pull both of mine off once a year or so and lube the pivot ball and the tips. Takes about a year for the dust to get in there and make it squeak. Pull off slave, pull off boot. Square hole in trans case (bellhousing) has a little notch in one corner from the factory.......viola. Slides back in and onto the ball no problem after. One is the 91 ZF42 and the other 96 ZF47.
