Hey ya'll,

I found a Detroit 6V92TA on CL here locally, the motor looks to be in pretty good shape and the guy is asking $1,000 for it. I was thinking this would be a cool swap in to my F-250. I mean a lot of people are going Cummins, so I think a Detroit would be cool. If I do move along with this is there anything I should know about the 6V92TA? As well as how hard are parts to find?

Thanks

I don't think parts are too hard to find at truck shops, although I'm not sure...2-stroke Detroits used to be VERY common, but they're getting older and more rare because of it...

As to getting it in your F-250...I'm not going to say that it's impossible, but a 6V-92 is not exactly a small engine. It was a common engine in full-size transit buses and would also be suitable for a semi. It's CERTAINLY bigger than a 6BT Cummins or a DT360, and I'm pretty sure it's considerably larger than a DT466. Again, I'm not saying that it can't be done, but you've got your work cut out for you...I imagine you'd need a body lift or to eliminate the hood just for the engine, let alone a tranny that'll handle the torque.

FWIW there are some videos floating around YouTube of a GMC pickup with a 4-53T swapped in. I'm attaching a pic I found a while back of a Ford engine bay with a 6-71 shoved in...granted the 6V-92's not as long as an inline 6-71, but it's wider and physically larger...

I've got a 8V71 and a V730 Allison, but the Detroit is a left hand slant engine. You could put it in the bed, total weight is only 5400#. Which would you prefer, the cable or air shift. Top RPM is only 2100, but lots of power with a 4:10 rear. The tranny alone weighs 1100, so the engine weighs 4300, but you could take the 360 amp alternator and air compressor off, that would prolly reduce the weight to 5000#. Then there is the radiator, one hugh SOB. :rotflmao:rotflmao

That 6V92 also takes that hugh SOB radiator, but it would look neet pushing that down the road.

You could beef up the front end, install a short bed, move the cab back,Cut and weld extention pannels in the fenders.........That might actually work.....or instead of cutting up the front end you could do all that and install a flip front hood from a big ford....or just buy a tractor and put your cab and bed on it...

I know that in the late 70's that Cat, through their authorized dealers, McAllister here in Indy was one of them. You could bring in you pickup, I knew someone that saw a 79' F-350. Cat offered a conversion kit, the dealer removed the gas powerplant from the truck and replaced it with a 3208 Cat. Not sure if it was NA or Turbo. They were one pulling monster at that point.....
