im about to start the body work on my 87.

i will be using HOK KD2000 as a primer/sealer

using an OD green Acrylic enamel as a "base"
this is a flat single stage paint.

im thinking about hitting it with a clear coat afterwards, to protect it for a bit longer.

however, with conventional clears, it will make the truck shine.

is there a way to reduce the shine and still having the clear over the base?

also, what kind of clears do you guys like/use?

^ This. The reading I've done says you can clear over about anything but if mixing acrylic enamel with urethane or laquer clear, make sure it is cured well before you clear it.

I would guess you would want to use hardener in the enamel which may make it a little shinier than the flat by itself. That has been my experience with the implement paint I've been using which is flat enamel with hardener. That will make it less likely that the clear would negatively affect it. The clear ought to flatten it I would think. A lot of rat rod guys clear them to seal in the patina.

Might be worth spraying put a test fender to make sure you get the look you want. I'm sure you have one laying around.

Hope that helps.

^^^ this or
Ask for a flatting agent.
Or toy with blending the color in your clear like doing a color patch/match, say a 20% color 80% clear, sort of a candy effect?!

Kinda fighting a loosing battle without stripping the entire truck to bare metal

ive used this stuff before, great product.
but as a painter, you know there is really no substitute for the clear.
it gives the paint depth and it also protects it longer.

this project is just a truck, and as long as i can get it to 1 color, ill be happy LOL
also, its a blank canvas for me to practice on, and it dont have to be perfect.
kind of wanting to experiment.
this truck will eventually be back under the knife, because i dont like the roof.
i see myself cutting it off, and installing a van roof.
just may chop the roof in the process... but dont tell anyone, its a secret!

I've painted my blazer with cheapo tractor supply tractor enamel with decent results. I've also done a project with a Qt of pearl used as the base with color mixed in till it was dark enough to sprey, then put a satin clear (20% shimmer) and it killed the pearl until you are right on it.... It works well keeping the shimmer down but doesn't turn out matted.
