I have a 2006 sterling with a 12.7 Detroit in it and it has a weird problem that three different shops have not been able to figure out. The problem goes away when I unplugged the wiring to the EGR valve, but the truck seems to lack a lot of power. EGR valve has been replaced with good used and problem seemed to disappear for a few miles but then came back.
The problem is that when accelerating between 1100 and 1400 rpm the Engine will surge three times and then start pouring a lot of black smoke out the exhaust as I accelerate. It does this very consistently and can be repeated between 1100 and 1400.
Below 1100 everything seems to run fine and above 1400 it runs okay but it’s pushing a little more smoke out the exhaust then it should
But the weird thing is if you unplug the electric wiring connector at the EGR valve the surge and the smoke both totally go away.
So far I spent several thousand dollars with three shops who haven’t been able to figure it out and the last one told me they had to start a five hour troubleshooting guide from Detroit and it was going to cost me a few thousand dollars whether they found a problem or not.
I’m wondering if somebody has encountered this exact symptom and problem before that can point me in the right direction without doing several hours of troubleshooting.
Thank you
Scott
