My brothers neighbors garage caught on fire and we went over to try and help him save what we could but he had a f350 CC 4x4 we couldn't get out he had block walls so it was just the roof that burnt but it melted the steel wheels clear off melted all brake line and fuel lines off fuel tanks were gone nuts were melted off bolts radiator was gone the top of the bed was only about 32" from the ground the big difference in heats is the 15 minutes at 1500deg or the 15secs at 1500degs

coolant doesnt flow around the valves or ports.

It runs through the heads, the valves and such are cooled via the cooling process. Don't believe me, don't seat a valve and see how long it takes to burn up. When the valve is closed, heat is dissipated into the seat which does have coolant around it or at least near it!

Don't really care to argue the matter, but don't run any coolant and see what let's go first! I bet you it will be your heads.

Valves will run Cherry red in normal operating conditions.

Don't doubt it a bit, but they aren't cast iron either. We used to work on many diesel engines that had sodium filled valves to assist in the cooling. Had to be real careful when re-facing them as the pressure applied to the valve was regulated by the guy running the machine and you could snap them which would result in a violent flash fire! :0

bet the engine siezes first.been there done that.grab that exhaust port after a 1500 degree run and tell me it only 200 degrees or less.there is no coolant passage in the exhaust port, around the valve seats ,yes but not in the ports.

Whatever dude, if you think any part of your engine is the same as your exhaust temp, then more power to you. There is no sense in arguing about it because you know it all already...what you are saying is that because your exhaust is 1500 degrees that your heads and such are as well. Have you ever pointed an point and shoot temp gauge at your manifolds? What temp was it? If you haven't try it sometime, and compare that temp to your exhaust temp, I'll bet you will see a difference, and there isn't any coolant there either.

The problem here is not knowing how hot this engine got. If the fire were concentrated around it, it got HOT - period! If the fire was on the other side of the building, maybe not so hot. Then you have to add in that it was possibly quick cooled. Anyone who knows anything about cast iron knows that is bad. If you have ever welded cast iron successfully, you didn't quick cool it. I am not saying anything is bad, I am saying it is possible.

Now go turbo your quad! :rotflmao

Well same here, but I got about 12 years on you plus ASE master certified, manager of a garage with 6 or more mechanics for 12 years, 6 years engine machining ASE certified engine machinist, cylinder head specialist, flow bench certified and the list goes on. I meant point it at it when you are seeing 1300 degrees or so. And to answer your first question, you should throw all that stuff away, you have ruined it!!!

Better yet, you win, you are just to smart for me. I guess 3 national championships about 15 state etc. building engines is just non-sense. I have read through many of your posts and see you prefer to argue than to listen. Also have multiple years building engines for Randy Crabtree, a nationally sponsored sprint car racer making over 1300 horsepower with all aluminum, but I am sure you PSD makes more than that anyway, just small apples and I can throw other names around all day, but why, you still wouldn't believe me anyway. You are on a board here with many great people with a lot of great input, many with more knowledge than you or I.

To the topic of this post - if the engine saw much of the burn, it could be brittle. My guess is it would be fine, but there is no real good test for it. If you have it magnafluxed, it will only tell if there are cracks, not how the metal is doing. Did you get to look around where the engine was in the fire? What kind of damage was done there?

Good luck and sorry this post went so far out in left field. Funny how that often happens here!
