Just to be sure, two wires go from the voltage regulator to the alternator, one wire connects the alternator to the passenger solenoid, but there is a fourth wire on the alternator with a flat metal plate that is bolted to the alt. Does this connect with a dash gauge or something? It has a squarish plastic tip on the end of it.
