Hey guys my 88 f 350 has been down on power for a while now and abiut 2 months ago i had a compression test done which resulted in one cylinder coming in at 410 and the rest at low 300s well this past weekend i hooked on to about 8000 pounds and boy what a gutless thing on the hills. It has a turbo and 4.10 gears with a c6 the truck was fine on the flAtt it felt really strong but on the hills i fell from 110 km to 60 i know this is never going to work like a newer truck but it should work better than this. My diesel mechanic says he thinks its the top rings. Im just getting frustrated i guess and im looking for opinions on what you guys think? Thanks alot colin

Hills are pretty ******* these things with a load. Its my experience that you won't be able to maintain speed on most hills with a decent load. You'll at least lose 5-10% of your speed, often a lot more. If the fuel system is old that could really wake it up. Or timing on your current system could be retarted, might be able to adjust the injection pump to give more fuel (with care). At the end of the day these things have the torque to get you where you want to go, just not the horsepower to do it at the speed limit. I've been in 2nd and 3rd gear (with a 5 speed manual transmission) on hills with mine, though mine was a little sick at that point and non-turbo.

Try running some snake oil in it to see if that will bring the compression up sometimes it works some times it doesnt, thats why i call it snake oil, and im reffering to auto rx also how many miles is on the fuel system whatts the timing set at

Alll the above is really what you need to do. If you have a pyro what was the exhaust temps while hauling this load up the hills.

-Is the IP original? As the pump ages/wears, the timing retartds, hurting power.
-Are the injectors original? Again, the more mileage, the more ******* and leakers you'll have and greater variances in pop pressures.
-Timing? Like stated above, retarded timing will hurt power.
-Compression is low and there is a very broad range between the highest and lowest cylinders, not good.
-Ever done a used oil analysis? Can help confirm a suspected issue of help point you down the right path.
-What are your boost and EGT's doing?
-Do you really want to keep that C6? I'd replace it with a manual trans, less parasitic loss and the non-locking C6 torque converter wastes too much power for my tastes.

With 4.10 gears and a turbo, you should have a good hauling rig. Not going to race up a moutain with 4 ton in tow, but, it should do better.

I love having an auto truck cause i have 2 other manual trucks, so its something nice, but i hate the way my c-6 is:puke: it really waste power, and stalls way to high, it will stall to 2200 rpm and 50 mph is 2300rpm and i have 3.55 gears, so i would guess my trans or convertor may be slipping a little to much

When I bought my '92, 12 years ago, it had similar compression issues I found when doing a thorough check. It seemed to run fine except the piping for the turbo was all rotted out. After I tore the engine apart I found the top rings to have metal flaking off the face. I'm not sure if it was a chrome faced ring or not, but flaked off metal doesn't help the ring seal to well. New rings solved my problem and a valve job, while it was apart. Your truck may have sticking rings, worn rings, burnt valves, etc.

Thanks for all the replys guys the truck only has 33000 kms so im doubting that the ip and injectors are wore out cAn an ip loose its timing if it sits for long periods of time? This truck has sat sine 90 in a garage. Also with my non wg banks i had 9 lbs of boost and my egts were about 625 on the hills. Im really starting to think the tops rings are mAngled and stuck in the piston.

Naw, the pump can't lose timing while sitting, but it does sound like the rings might be on their way out.

I have 3.55's, no turbo and I can haul 8000 pounds uphill fairly efficiently...mind you I won't hold 110 all the time, but I never dropped below 90 while hauling my aunt's camper.

If the pump was replaced 33K Kilometers ago, then at a minimum you should have the timing checked. What are your exhaust gas temperatures reading?
