A guy I know just bought a 95 supper duty psd 5spd. I know a few thing about this but when I was cheking it out for Him I found oil in the coolant overflow so I open the cap on the radiator and it is all nice and green, what is going on?

I don't know what coolant exactly to use either, is it the same low silicate we IDI guys get at international? Is the cavitation problem still the same on this blocks meanimg should He get additive dca or sca? I don't know if someone just add coolant to the rad so no one would see the oil in it but I would guess after some use it would mix with more oil so maybe some one fixed it but if so, they should also clean the overflow.

Any Help? Thank You.

I thought all the PSDs had the degas bottle no overflow and no radiator cap I dunno

Are you sure its oil or just dirty anti freeze that needs a flush

Aric, You know, I have little knowledge of this psd but the rad does have a cap 16lbs. The overflow valve or the one thing that has a 3/8" hose running to it from the top of the rad has a fluid in it that doesn't look at all like the one in the radiator, is like thinned oil no milk shake looking dough and the oil dipstick has normal looking oil, but the level was about 2qts high, although I would attribute that to some one taking the truck for an oil change at a place like wall-mart where they don't know about oil capacities  .

Thank You.

Zieke, All diesels benefit from some sort of coolant additive....with th exception of Dex Cool--the orange kool aid looking crap.

personally, I have had no issues what so ever using ELC's , both CAT and Rotella.

If you feel the need to shy away from ELC's then Fleetcharge would be my next suggestion.

If memory serves, Richard {hheynow} had a similiar episode with oily slime in his bottle and he just used some pads to skim the oil film and apparently he had no ill effects!
;Sweet

hope this helps

OK, so I'll get some low silicate coolant and fleetcharge from IH dealer.
The little coolant tank (pass side) looks like it's full of thin oil so I'll flush it and refill then cross My fingers so it doesn't fill with oil again.

Thank You.

the 94's and some early 95 have the copper/brass rad same as an IDI, with an overflow bottle.
the 95+ with the plastic/ alum rad have a degass bottle.
as for the oily slime, may be some one added some magic waterpump lube.
seen it before

but shouldn't it be mixed with the rest of the coolant in the radiator? The engine wont run again until I get this thing flushed and hope for the best.

gees, the mechanical stuff is soooooo much easier.

Thank You.

Thank You.

Excellent, Thank You.;Sweet

95_Strocker, I'm learning slow but steady with excellent link You provided. What is the injector cap? I guess I should remove them all first to know if they are leaking right? It does not look like fuel at all but oil, that is coming out asap anyway then flush and refill with new fresh coolant.

it could have had a leaking oil cooler oring or gasket recently.cavitation isnt as bad a problem as it is with the idi.

and my 95 also has the normal radiator cap and overflow bottle

Zeke,

Check this.;Sweet

I think if you had a bad injector o-ring you might see oil in the degas bottle also.

Now that is very interesting and could very well be what I'm looking at. It doesn't explain much on how to remove the cups and how to install the new one but I guess it must be obvious once I have the injector out. Doesn't list any part #'s , should I just ask for this cups at the dealer or is there other sources?

Thank You.

injector cup is pressed into the head and held in place with locktite.
they require special tools to remove and install them.
as to checkl them you must remove injectors, then pressurize the cooling system, and look for leaks around the tops.
but from what I was trained a leaky injector cup will put anitfreeze in the fuel, not oil in the antifreeze.

for oil in the antifreeze, its either the oil cooler, a cracked or cavitated block, a cracked head. there is no way for a an injector to pass oil to the antifreeze
