2 idi questions

I've got a few questions for you guys. First, I've heard that a powerstroke zf5 or any diesel zf5 from an obs truck for that matter will work in an idi. Is that true? My second question is, how do I find out what gear ratio my truck has. Its a 94 f250 idi, I've been told that the only options for that year were 3.55 or 4.10. I looked all over both axles for a tag or stamp or something but I couldn't find anything Thanks in advance for any help.

Can't help ya with the first, but as for the second.......If there were no tags on the rear diff cover bolts then your next best bet is going to be the Axle code on the door sticker......Also, I want the tires off that truck in your avatar....

As far as the axle ratio, if there is no tag on the differential, look on the driver door or door frame. There should be an axle code on that sticker. Post the axle code back here on the forum and we can tell you what axle ratio you have (asumming it's the stock rear end and hasn't been changed). If you don't have the door sticker, the other option is to call a Ford dealer with your VIN # and they should be able to tell you as well.

Alrighty thanks I'll take a look at the door tag. And yeah, those are some pretty bad ass tires, "Country Squires" is what their called, one heck of a good gumbo tire. I don't even know if they make narrow nobbies like that anymore...

Keep inmind if the tag is missing, it more than likely was removed. I would verify the ratio if a tag is missing because the previous owner may have done a gear swap and intentionally left off the tag. This was the case with my truck which should have 4.10's but instead has 4.56's and no tag.
Either count drive saft rotations to tire rotations or pull the cover and count the pinion teeth and ring gear teeth and divide to get the ratio.
ex: 41ringteeth/10pinionteeth=4.10:1 ratio

Or pull the diff cover and look at the stamped ratio on the ring gear.

The adapter plate (ford sometimes calls it the starter ring) is different on the powerstroke but if you swap over the plate along with the transmission, it *should* work.

Ok, well the truck currently has no gears in the rear end, only the front. So I may have to check the codes instead, but thanks for the info.

Ok thanks, I bought the truck without a transmission however so I wont be able to swap the "starter ring." Looks like I'll just hunt for an idi tranny. Thanks for the help man.

A idi trans has the EXACT same bell housing bell pattern as the powerstroke. I have swap them both ways without any issues

Ok So I looked at the axle code on the door sticker and it says 35. My other pickup with 4.10s also has the same code. Does that mean I can assume that that's the gear ratio I have? Thanks for the help.
