I pickup up a 98 F150 4x4 4.6l for cheap as it is very sluggish to go into reverse. All other gears are fine and it shift fine and NO slippage. But it takes up to a minute after shifting to R before it actually engages. Hot or cold.

What could be going on here? sticking solenoid? The fluid looks fairly old but not burnt.

Ok thanks for the replies guys!!

I guess if im lucky it would be a sticky valve.... So I will try the cheapest thing first and change the fluid and add some cleaner.conditioner and run it for a while and see what happens.

Would you recommend anything else?

Will do, might be a while though as I won't be jumping into this anytime soon. Just searching ideas for now.
