We recently got back from a few days in the Black Hills of South Dakota and one of the things we did was ride the 1880 train.
Found out on the ride that the engine burned waste oil, because it would not throw sparks like wood or coal.
I thought at the beginning of the trip the exhaust smoke smelled familiar. When they noted the waste oil I said "hey I'm burning the same stuff"
To that my 15yr old said, "well it smokes like your pickup", so the burn was on me.
If you get a chance to spend time in the Black Hills, do it. It's been many years since we've been there and the Hills have alot of new stuff.
The 1880 train website has some really good pics, if you want better pics.

The first pic is on the way out.
Second pic was the engine going around us and pull us back to Hill City, backwards.
