A cautionary tale about the use or rather mis-use of ether to start a IDI motor.

Mr. Bruce, all of the locating dowels where accounted for so no not what is was. Mr. Ward. I did not keep track of cost but I can say the machine shop cost was about $1300.00. I think well worth it as they found what MIGHT have been a pin hole. And it was nice knowing all the surface's where...

    block heater question

I put a heater on the radiator hose. I had it on all night and this morning the truck started with about 10 seconds of glow plug just fine. Temp out was 20 degrees. I tried a new Kat's brand block heater and could not get it to seat into the hole right. no matter how I put it in the eliment...

The problem with new brake shoes and the parking brake.

Thanks for this, I put new shoes and drums on mine last fall. They seems to work well if I hold them and let off the clutch while it is gear. Trouble is when the truck is on a boat ramp with the boat the brake will not hold. I don't want to get onto youtube so I turn off the motor, leave it in...

A cautionary tale about the use or rather mis-use of ether to start a IDI motor.

So the machine shop sleeved two cylinders and honed four. They wanted to do all eight but as the cylinders all measured within new tolerances I did not have them do it.I was able to locate four oil squirters and install them ( I found the oilers by searching eBay ( NOS 1983 1984 1985 FORD...

A cautionary tale about the use or rather mis-use of ether to start a IDI motor.

Gfeming, I think yours is an really good guess. I had gone through putting new o-rings in the oil cooler. Since I don’t have anyway to test an oil cooler for pressure I had to go with blind faith that the o-rings would work and not be damaged when I put it together. I pressed it together with a...

A cautionary tale about the use or rather mis-use of ether to start a IDI motor.

OK, just to be clear the last three photo’s are of the top and side of the number one piston. The damage seen in the photo’s happened after I put the heads on the first time. I only ran the engine a few minutes. I pulled the motor for the second time and found this. I was the only person to work...

A cautionary tale about the use or rather mis-use of ether to start a IDI motor.

This time I wanted to do more to the motor and make it easier to do it. So I bought a HF engine stand, the bigger of the two they offer. Once onto the stand, the oil pan off and upside down I could then see the bent rod. From the pictures you can see while in the engine the bend is very subtle...

A cautionary tale about the use or rather mis-use of ether to start a IDI motor.

No, operating glow plugs and no evidence of fluids in the cylinder. My tale continues. Not only did the truck run but it hauled a full pallet of quikrete (3400lbs on a 60 mile trip up to my farm. Then the day before Memorial Day there was another even louder detonation bang , ( I have to add...

A cautionary tale about the use or rather mis-use of ether to start a IDI motor.

I have owned and operated many diesel motors in my time and I’ve used ether to start them and many a cold gas motor. Never thought twice about it as at least on of the diesels had a system built in that would inject ether right into the intake manifold. Today however I will bet money I will...

    Turning over 6.9 by hand

Update is this. Problem turned out to be a bent rod in the number 4 cylinder. Motor was started with either and there was a loud detonation sound, a stuck motor, the bottom of the piston was taping onto one of the crank shaft balancer lobes. and then it ran. And I might add that even with the...

    early 6.9 piston cooling nozzles?

Here are photo's of a early block. I can not see how a new style bolt in oiler would work, there is no flat to drill and tap into.

    Sodium silicate

It would seem to me that using Sodium silicate is a short term fix to a long term problem. It also might create new problems. I just got done replacing the head gasket on my 6.9. I pulled the motor out as I also wanted to clean it up (it was a greasy mess) and replace all of the seals. But you...

    Turning over 6.9 by hand

OK that worked, MOTOR IS FREE, and it turns easily. had to give it every thing I had and I am sure I will feel it tomorrow. On a side note a guy on YouTube used Marvel Mystery oil to free up his motor. He said motor oil did not. And he added to be sure all the oil or most is gone before putting...

    Turning over 6.9 by hand

(Hydrolock occurs when a volume of liquid greater than the volume of the cylinder at its minimum (end of the piston's stroke) enters the cylinder. Since liquids are nearly incompressible the piston cannot complete its travel; either the engine must stop rotating or a mechanical failure must...

    Turning over 6.9 by hand

I have taken the glow plugs out loosened the injector fuel lies and will squirt a goodly amount of PB Blaster into each cylinder. The motor was running when I parked in my driveway and then I pulled the motor. Issue was a blown head gasket and it was blowing a lot of coolant out of two...

    Turning over 6.9 by hand

Just got done putting on heads, and injector pump, then I tried turning the motor by hand. I was using a 12" breaker and a 1 2" inch piece of pipe. I can not budge the motor. Sould it be this hard, need advice.
