So what did you do with your truck today?

Painted my winter wheels, in Idaho we are allowed to run studded tires from October 1 to April 30. Who else here runs a set of winter tires? Chains?

    Painting steel wheels

Sorry for the late response. I go for long periods of time without checking this forum, then briefly post a few times. The paint is definitely not as durable as a factory wheel paint, but I have no complaints. I've always had to install the wheels within about a day of painting them, so the lug...

So what did you do with your truck today?

So glad I live in Idaho. Plenty of people in Spokane get their gas in Idaho because of the major price different just across the border.

So what did you do with your truck today?

Yep, square tube worked better for the lights. The light buckets have a fixed length of threads to work with, and it isn't long enough to get to the other side of a 1 inch square tube, so I had to get creative with mounting the buckets to it. Ended up running a nut on both sides of my hole so I...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Update on the lights- I drove around for about 10 minutes earlier this week. I learned that the angle iron wasn't stiff enough to prevent vibrations from effecting those top heavy lights. As I drove down the road and hit bumps I could see the light bouncing up and down slightly, and it annoyed...

So what did you do with your truck today?

I had to order a couple of headlight buckets, usually meant for a motorcycle. Got these on ebay for 50 a piece. I thought I would be able to mount them to my bumper like my light bar had been, but the lights and buckets are much too big and they stuck out way to far. I took the grill off and...

So what did you do with your truck today?

They are made by trucklite, 7 inch round headlight. I found a good deal on these locally, so I went with them. I'm happy with how these turned out. I definitely had some reservations about cutting my grill, but I think the black paint draws your attention to the lights.

So what did you do with your truck today?

Mounted some LED headlights to a piece of angle iron I bolted to the radiator support. Wired it up to a relay and a three way switch on the dash, off, low and high beams. They are DOT approved, so I can use them on the road. Had a LED light bar on the bumper before, but didn't like that it was...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Got a Christmas tree from the forest today. Snow was up to my waist and so deep in some spots I had to turn back. IDI did great and sure liked being plugged in for a few hours this morning with temps in the teens.

    Bucking on acceleration when warm

I had not used my front tank for a while because I wasn't confident in my selector switch and needed to make a long trip. I can easily get 250 miles out of the rear tank and fill up with 12 gallons or so which is what I did on my trip. Now that I'm at home base, I switched to the front tank and...

    Painting steel wheels

I did each wheel individually, because that's all I had time for each night and I wasn't too sure about my small jack stands on the gravel. Took me about 2.5 hours per wheel. I went through all 5 cans of paint for 4 wheels.

    Painting steel wheels

Thank you, Jesus Freak. Yeah, ideally the tires and weights would have been taken off, but you work with what you have. I was able to get the grinder and paint on the edge of the rim fairly well. The tricky part was the welded seam just outside the spokes, there was a lot of rust down there and...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Hey there, I haven't posted here in some time. I moved overseas for a few years and my poor 6.9 stayed in a field in Austin Texas the whole time, only being occasional started back when the batteries had some charge. Well, I finally got back to the states last month and was able to retrieve the...

    Painting steel wheels

I did paint both sides of the wheels, but for my rims the back side isn't visible when mounted on the truck, so I stopped at the gray paint. The metallic paints are a bit more expensive than a regular rattle can so I figured only do the fronts with them. Also, don't forget to splash a little...

    Painting steel wheels

I'm waiting for 5 to 10.minutes between coats to allow it to dry. Next comes a base coat of gray paint, followed by aluminum and finally a metallic. I thought the aluminum would look good, but its too shiny and let the imperfections show through. The metallic paint is a few shades darker and...

    Painting steel wheels

I started with rust control red primer, then a coat of automotive primer. I think all the cans I used were rustolium, I will post the product codes later on.

    Painting steel wheels

The prep takes the longest and at this point they are ready to prime and paint. Cut a long strip of cardstock or a piece of a cereal box to use for keeping the paint off of the tires as much as possible. The rubber is easy to clean up once you're done so you don't have to be worried about a...

    Painting steel wheels

To start, I remove the wheel and apply degreaser, then wash with soap and a scrubber. Try to get off as much as possible, don't want to be messing with brake dust so I like to wash it off first. Then, use an angle grinder with wire wheel the take away rust and scuff up the paint. Use a drill...

    Painting steel wheels

Howdy everyone. Just got done painting some rusty steelies for my 6.9 IDI. I've painted one set of steel wheels before for a Xterra, they turned out pretty good but I wanted to try things a little different for this go round. I'll be attaching some pictures to this thread and will explain what I...
