Saved this old girl from the crusher today

Nice work. Too many people default to crushing and disposing of these old vehicles.

    7.3 idi

Are you getting fuel from the Schrader valve? If not, read this http://www.nickpisca.com/diesel/fuel-system/what-to-do-if-no-diesel-fuel-is-coming-out-of-the-schroeder-valve-on-a-6-9-7-3-idi/ If yes, I'd say your fuel pressure is low for some reason.

Does anyone have the official 7.3 ARP stud torque specs and sequence?

Almost all the Crank Main bolt torque tutorials on Youtube end with an angular finish torque spec.

COMPLETE ENGINE BOLT TORQUE SPEC FOR THE 7.3/6.9

When I tore down my 7.3, I documented all the bolts and their respective threads. When I reassembled it, I diagrammed out all any necessary torque sequences and identified them. Here are the images from my collection, and I added some 6.9 IDI info as well, and I identified any differences...

Does anyone have the official 7.3 ARP stud torque specs and sequence?

The confusing thing about the ARP instructions is they say "Following the manufacturers recommended torque sequence..." However, the "recommended manufacturer" instructions have 2 sequences for torquing down the head bolts, where step 1 and step 2 correspond to the ARP diagram, but steps 3 and...

Does anyone have the official 7.3 ARP stud torque specs and sequence?

Thanks. This is pretty much the same directions for the 6.9 studs that I read online, except for the final torque (80 ft-lbs for the 6.9). The thing I don't get is, the ARP diagram does correspond to the Step 1 and Step 2 torque sequence in the Ford Service Manual, but the ARP document says...

He already checked one side under the valve cover. I think he's going to check the other side today.

Time and budget estimate for project

THIS is the best advice. My only criticism of the Big Red Project (I don't have many, it's an outstanding thread), is you have to be something like 60 pages in before he gets to the IDI stuff. And for the most part, his mods are superficial. He didn't do any of the rebuild himself and the...

    IDI torque specifications

I know this is an ANCIENT thread, but it's the first hit on google when I search for "7.3 IDI Torque Specs" and it doesn't have the link to the better IDI torque spec thread located here: I just can't stand searching on the internet (with dirty hands) for the specs and not getting the right...

Turbo IDI won't start after engine swap

Good to hear you got it all running. Coincidentally today, I was looking for the thread size of the VC bolts and I stumbled upon this post from a decade ago: http://intellidog.com/dieselmann/idi2.htm He discusses this in a section titled: Engine stalls at stops or when deprsessing clutch...

Time and budget estimate for project

A 4x4 getting 17MPG.... hmmm. That's pretty tough for a 4.10 axle and/or auto tranny. Your sig mentions a 4speed, so maybe you are talking about that. Then you should be able to get 17MPG, unless you have some odd gear ratio. If you have an auto, then you'd have to invest in some ecomods...

    Leaking valve cover gasket

Here in Los Angeles, I can't trust anyone to wrench on my IDI and TDI. they have no clue on these older diesels.

    Which 33/38 gallon rear tank?

Bummer. I'd rather have it read "F" more than "E" early. SInce you can easily access the sender in a truck, you should pull it out and bend the float wire down more, so it reaches closer to the tank. Kinda like what I did with the 460 sender for my IDI van tank:

    Bad 3g alternator?

I agree you need it tested by an auto store to ensure a proper diagnosis. However, I don't trust auto parts stores anymore. If some pimply teenage wallflower tests your alternator, you might want to have it tested elsewhere. They are notorious for incorrectly testing them. Once at a Pep...

    IP troubles...

If your FSS is clicking, then you probably don't have to replace it. I'm talking more about the metering valve. It rests in the bottom of the IP reservoir, and controls the output of the IP. In order to access it, you need to open the top of the IP, and pull the cover off. Then with really...

    IP troubles...

Just to make sure, are you cracking your injector lines at the injectors? I'm sure you are, but I have to ask. If not, read this. Whenever I run my IP dry, my internal metering valve seizes shut. No fuel will get pushed out of the IP to the injectors. The only solution that I've found is to...

Turbo IDI won't start after engine swap

wow. I never would have guessed that. You could run a wire from the battery and manual switch to the FSS (like in my engine stand video) just so you can run it for now. As for the two other leads on the IP, one connects to your coolant temp sensor switch (usually mounted on the front top of...

Turbo IDI won't start after engine swap

I'd suggest checking your timing, but you aren't getting massive smoke so I doubt it's that. This is really confounding. Maybe some of the other IDI guys can chime in with more ideas. Does it starve for power if you remove your air filter?
