Hey!
Having a strange hard starting issue on my ‘86 6.9 IDI Van. Currently on road trip and appreciate any help!
Recently did the “return line kit” before my trip. Had some coolant level issues and troubleshooted that, then the same morning, the van took a lot of cranking to start.
3 days...
Great thanks @david85 yes I’ll have to try some more tests like you suggested to confirm if my tachometer is functioning properly.
Strange I’m getting such a low voltage off my new sensor, I’m thinking maybe it’s not close enough to the cam gear, gonna try to torque down the sensor more and...
Thanks for everyones input so far! Much to think about.
@david85 - yes it should be for a diesel engine, however not sure if it's calibrated for Alternator signal or MAG signal. Looking on the Beene website, they differentiate the two types of diesel tachs. Found a manual - Magnet Pickup Tach...
Been trying to hookup an aftermarket tachometer to my 6.9 E350 with C6. Don’t necessary need one, but thought it would be nice.
Anyways, after my first used sensor was no good, I received a new one (Standard Motor) and wired it to my 3” diesel tachometer from eBay. But after some frustrating...
Depends on your headlights sizes.
For my ‘86 with the 5x7. I went down this rabbit hole and ended up with Hella H4 Eurostyle housings, and there 100w/50w bulbs. Plus the relay harness.
Really wanted some 5x7 LED’s but since I drive mainly in the winter I was concerned about the LED’s not...
Interesting idea! Following for updates.
Will this be compatible for 6.9 too? Seems like this is a completely new system from scratch, should be cross-compatible eh?
Thinking of ordering a set of these ZD-28 plugs from RA. I still see 4 ZD-1 plugs for half-price. Think I could order 4 of ZD-1 and 4 ZD-28? Is it just a product code difference?
Up in Canada here RA has saved me thousands of dollars on my van and VW. Even with the shipping. If I manage to get...
I found out the other day I was timing off #2 thinking it was #4 being opposite #1! Figured out my mistake and good to go now. Other then getting the Gunson pulse adapter to ****’n work
Might be too tight to flip around in my van. I’ll try later!
Also anyone have experience with using #4 cylinder vs #1 for pickup pulse timing?
#4 was really off (negative 5* maybe more) , #1 seems close to 8* now.
Getting some strange timing readings using #4 on my van, almost like -5* btdc if I could guess (meter doesn’t go negative)
Then I switched to #1 cylinder and seems to be close to 8*, (at least adjustable +- 2*)
Should I just time off of #1 moving forwards. On Facebook someone says those...
Well the wooden one snapped trying to move the pump! Whipped up this metal guy in 10 mins using the wood as a template and works like a charm!
Now is it just me or does the thing only advance the pump? Guess I just push the pump by hand to retard eh
Thanks for the replies! Someone realized that I have the pickup clamped on the line near the injector pump, rather then near the injectors them self!! Will try again this weekend :)
Currently trying to fight this issue as well! Anything above 1500 rpm and the meter goes all over the place….
Works great at idle, just not anywhere close to the 2000rpm I need to be at…. Find any sweet spots on your lines to clamp to?!
Yes I cut a piece out of a hardwood plywood! Haven’t got a chance to use the tool yet. Thanks again @nelstomlinson for the tracing!!
Having issues with my Gunson* Pulse adapter and timing meter… I am getting inconsistent pulses from the tool. I have attempted many different IP lines and...
Thanks for the tender!! Yea I was also thinking along the same lines, if I could find a spot to grab the IP. There’s a bolt on the back side that may work. No notch or hole on the front side from what I can see. How much leverage is needed when the IP is unbolted to move?
I feel like tracing...
I swear I found it like this!
No 3/4” square casting to grab. There is a notch under the top bolt on the casting that the Adjusting tool would grab. Can see it a bit better here. This is a “Champion Diesel” injection Pump.
Yes I found those tools on EBay, last night. A little expensive...
I think I need this bigger style wrench to grab the IP body, since I don’t have the 3/4” square tab like most do….
Do you have a link to this wrench? Thanks!
Hi looking to adjust my IP. However my pump doesn’t have this 3/4” square part to rotate the pump.
Thoughts on how I can adjust? Maybe @Cubey i need this special tool you mentioned?
Thanks!
That would be awesome! I’ll DM you to chat more.
I’m thinking it’ll take;
- new mount
- Modify uppipes - either connect into y and single up - to plumb to new mount location.
-Modify / new intake, ideally cold
- exhaust
- intake hat modify pipe to connect to turbo location.
Hopefully maybe...
Noted thanks! Yes Nick Pisca has great resources about the vans and great instructions on installs etc. Are they still on this forum? Be great to chat.
There’s also this 7.3 stock turbo kit in my area. Price is okay, asking $1100. What’s really useful out of this setup for a van?
Turbo and intake hat?
FYI it’ll cost me about $4000 in total to get the Hypermax van kit shipped up to me
