White smoke out the exhaust at least means fuel is getting to the injectors. Aside from other problems, it can be difficult to start an IDI without good batteries and glow plugs.
Any chance you still have the two-piece fuel filter/water separator? The two-piece style is infamous for air...
I write down the odometer mileage at every fill-up and base my range on that mileage. I don't trust 30+ year old gauges and sensors. At least the odometers seem to keep working in these things--knock on wood.
I'm a landscaper and have an opportunity to purchase an E350 with a 7.3 Powerstroke and only 38k miles. I've never owned a van or a Powerstroke before. How much of a PITA are diesel vans to work on? Generally reliable? Any quirks I should know about? Although the mileage is low the van is...
If you still have the factory GP controller I would recommend converting to a manual push button GP setup. The manual setup is much more reliable than the factory controller, at least in my opinion.
FYI the locating dowels are easy to find. Fordpartsgiant.com had 'em and it appears that the 7.3 powerstroke used the same locating dowels through 2003. Very overpriced for what they are but still cheaper than a lathe and delivered in a few days.
Any ideas on making something with off-the-shelf components? Copper pipe with a slit cut lengthwise so the diameter can be adjusted? I have a client who's a machinist that might be able to help me if I had some accurate specs for diameter and height.
I already installed the head on the side...
No studs, engine in frame, lots of fun so far. I understand why people say they would rather pull the engine if doing both heads. A lot of time is spent just dealing with the space restrictions and obstacles under the hood. Although I did learn a nifty method for holding up a few of the...
My thoughts exactly. I looked closely to make sure the dowels hadn't split in half and were lodged in the block and head. It seems so random to have only one dowel. And it sure seems like there was an "eff it" moment for someone.
I've read about using hair spray to glue the head gasket in...
I think all TPS are black now since Motorcraft no longer produces them. Standard Motor Products TPS has been fine. I've compared a few NOS Motorcraft TPS to a new SMP version and they both performed the same--slightly different resistance values when testing them individually but as long as...
Your FIPL/TPS is out of range technically. Throttle Position Sensor should read 1.2v at idle and anything over 4.0v at WOT should be good. The TPS is considered a "wear" item and I think 50k miles is its expected lifespan.
If you end up buying a new VSS I had trouble with the Dorman version...
So when I pulled the heads I found only 1 locating dowel. W T F? I looked all around where i was working and nothing had fallen on the ground. This is a bit perplexing. Aside from helping to align the gasket and hold the head in place during assembly, do the dowels perform a critical...
Do you get substantial blowby with engine running and oil filler cap removed? Exhaust color?
That's a strange looking intake hat & turbo setup--any brand markings?
I've never seen an oil feed line that wasn't wrapped in braided steel.
The problem is getting a proper crimp. There's an ocean of difference between chinese knock-offs and something like AMP Roto-Crimp. I pity the fool who makes battery cables with a hammer crimper.
Just heard back from the machine shop and although they are not finished I thought it was interesting that they said the intake valve guides looked fine but a lot of the exhaust valves were terrible. I'm just curious as to why the exhaust valves would be so much worse? Bad luck? Previous owner...
I live close to the coast and have had zero issues with DIY cables. I don't think you have a cheap way out of this situation if you want quality cables. The FTZ branded crimper is one of the best deals out there as far as buying something new. I recommend buying FTZ Powerlugs to go with their...
I suppose it could be the spring, but I do have 389k on my return spring and it's working just fine. I did improperly align the swingarm that the plastic bushing rides on--not the push rod--and that poor alignment 100% caused my sticking pedal. YMMV
When cranking do you get any white smoke out the exhaust? Fuel under pressure at the Schrader valve on the filter head? Anything that can be ruled out narrows the field.
I went with the routing that creates a full loop and avoids using a deadhead cap. I blocked off the port with the check valve on the filter header and have #1 connecting to #2 and then #7 connects to the return block--the IP return is teed into the line from #1 to #2. With my routing I had to...
If you choose studs then definitely pull the engine. I've heard it's possible to do it in-frame but after just removing both cylinder heads in-frame I now understand why so many people post that they'll never do it in-frame again.
