Ah yes I remember that thread. That's a bummer this is still giving you trouble. You say it had hard starts when you first picked it up. How long did this truck sit with the previous owner before you started working on it?
I'm interested what the compression test comes back as. It isn't the...
At this point I think it would be wise to list all the parts you've changed and what brand they are. I ask because in 2025 we have seen a large influx of what I call "brand new broken". Counterfeits everywhere. Namely the glow plugs. Listing those, possible pictures of the packaging can help...
If it means anything i've been running this fan with factory fan clutch for about a year or so. My last few trips roughly 300 miles have been in the 100 to 110 degrees here in the summer AZ. 110 is ******* stuff but i'm able to keep my AC maxed out up the grades and no issues. Temps tend to...
Seeing as it's an 83 i'd guess it has a ton of miles. Has a compression test ever been done to see if it's simply a well worn engine? The glow plugs would be my next visual inspection. Do they say BERU on the actual glowplug? How does the the engine run when it's all warmed up to operating temp?
I'm with @Black dawg on that one as well. Even if the cylinder is weak I'd get her running long enough to get more information about the motor. I wouldn't just go tearing into the motor willy-nilly. Any maintenance records on this thing?
As long as it has the rear diff sensor on top of the axle housing it should bolt right in! The only other difference I see would be the T19 gear ratio might be deeper than a diesel T19. The rear axle I used to swap out my original 87 axle was a 4:10 limited slip out of a 93 gasser. If it's a...
If money is tight maybe just get one axle built at a time and stretch things out. That's what I did when I needed a new rear axle. Mine was bent from an accident. I still daily my 87 IDI 4x4 and it's my favorite truck. She just starts and does everything I need.
Personally, i'd run Spicer 4:56 gears if it's heavy towing consistently with 34" tires. That should be a good balance of power to speed. I'm sure others will chime in with there suggestions.
I had a smiliar issue when I swapped out my rear 10.25" that was in an accident. The rear had 1" of tow in. I found another 10.25" axle with long pinion 4:10s with limited slip (came out of a 93). I had the short pinion 3:55's with open diff in the bent axle. I ended up swapping over the...
As long as your tires don't hit the control arm I say keep adjusting them. Just make sure your steering box actually has more to give or it's just wasted time. Steering stabilizer can be another limiter if you have one.
My first gen banks kit was set at somewhere like 7-8 lbs. of boost max with the Banks exhaust. Also, if you're running it up in that neighborhood you need an EGT gauge to be safe. Banks documents what your vitals should look like when your engine is running heavy and unloaded...
If it makes you feel better you're not alone. I've already put in a new booster, master cylinder, and two vacuum pumps on my truck and i've had it for maybe 3 years.
I wouldn't recommend paint or powdercoat mainly because it can add unnecessary thickness to the I.D. of the part and possibly contamination in the fuel system. One the other hand I think anodizing would be a great option. It's also very easy to do once you get set up. Other than that I think...
When I couldn't come up with any good factory diesel fuel lines I ended up getting some decent fuel line off amazon and just replaced it. It's been a couple years and so far so good.
I'm probably just overly cautious but I'd measure each new return cap with calipers, compare to the OE ones, and make sure they're sized correctly to your OE ones. Also, don't trash the OE parts. They turned out to be the best ones after many failed attempts with so called good return line kits.
Last time I installed a Delphi kit the straight caps were perfect but the turns were all (.010") oversized and leaked slowly. I ended up going back to my factory 6.9 caps and they all fit nice and snug. All factory 6.9 caps measured the same. I blocked the fuel filter return with Russ's kit...
The KBB for a 1992 is about 3-4k which is total BS. I'd say post it for $9999.99 and see who bits. Don't be upset when people low ball it's all part of the game. A manual diesel truck with a d60 front is at the top of the list as far as sought after. I'd spend the money on a detail, spiff...
My first question would be what's the full backstory on this engine you're starting to build? Year, displacement, engine health, mileage, what did it come out of?
I wouldn't. Seems like way too much fabrication to make something work that isn't quite right for the application. Those turbos put out like 15-20 PSI stock which is probably way overkill for a bone stock high compression IDI. If you want a turbo, which I agree is a great addition, i'd just...
