2017 Rally Route / Convoy thread (east coasters)

I would definitely go the PA route. We take the turnpike to the New Stanton exit and then 70 west to Columbus. 68/79 is beautiful but very torturous indeed.

    Hypermax Dadiesl IDI Dragster

This is a nice summary of the info I've seen posted over the years. When I was out at Hypermax last Easter, we did talk about this engine, and yes it supposedly does still exist and sits unused. It was stupid expensive to make.

    project: watch out Kentuckians

Great thread Elijah! Many comments to make, but only time for one. I have a solution for those with Typ4 cams and contact issues. We now have available a head spacer that is available in .010 and .012 thicknesses. The local truck puller that I sponsor has successfully tested the .010 spacer...

Metal shavings injection pump: 7.3 idi no start

No real point in proceeding with that IP. There is a very real possibility the head and rotor seized. You can confirm this by cranking while looking through the triangular side cover. If you don't see any movement there, the pump is junk, and not a satisfactory core for a rebuild from me.

    Steel fuel lines

I've seen a lot of messed up things on IDI's, but that's a new one! Geez.... we've got lines and clamps in stock.

    Sad Timing News

Gary, very sorry to hear this. I recommend your service often. UPS has a habit of throwing stuff... they don't care what it is. It may be that you need more padding. I'm glad you have a source to get these repaired. As others have said, you are a true asset!

7.3 idi injection pump air lock, Or something worse?

Just watched your video. You need to understand that EVERY TIME you open up your fuel system, return, supply, or injection pump, your are ALLOWING THE FUEL FILTER TO DRAIN BACK INTO THE TANK. That means a ton of cranking just to get fuel to the pump! Seal the system and keep it sealed...

7.3 idi injection pump air lock, Or something worse?

I feel like your being led down a bad road here. Sadly, the methodology has been corrupted by many different things happening, and a lot of potential problems have been introduced. Let's look at the facts as we know them. 1) truck ran fine before you removed the injection lines (to service...

Help identify what's wrong with my ill 7.3 IDI

Something which you could do for peace of mind with all this, which has not been mentioned, is to get an oil sample off to Blackstone Labs. If you have any concerns about coolant or bearing problems, they will let you know what's going on. By everything that you have described, your pump and...

    HIgh idle after highway driving.

It's an IP problem. The thinner fuel from extended driving is causing it to behave differently. Average life expectancy of the pump and injectors is about 100,000 miles.

    Timing question

You have to be careful with what you hear, because some people don't have accurate meters, use the wrong RPM when they time, don't have a good pump on the truck, maybe dialed the offset iin wrong, etc. As Corey stated, we conclusively determined on HIS truck, that there is a small window for...

    Thermostat Swap - 192 vs 203 deg F?

Disconnect both hoses to your heater core and push some water from a garden hose through it. My bet is, your heater core is blocked. The stock thermostat, in a standard cab truck, even with the blend door not working, would put out enough heat to chase you out of the cab in short order.

    Return line rail

Somebody actually did make them. A machinist here, made a set for himself. I don't remember hearing how they held up however. I've looked into making injectors with a totally different body that would utilize more traditional banjo bolt fittings. The problem becomes one of cost. My...

    Introducing TOTAL MOOSEPOWER!

Thanks for the ping on this. Yes, we have two that are sold. One is in my bay right now waiting on payment, so not a lot of movement. Let's face it, the IDI community is a frugal one. While young 20 somethings with Dodge's will spend $10,000 for a few upgrades and another 100hp, getting the...
