I’m leaning towards the fire ring myself. I pressure tested the cooling system with 30 psi overnight and it should have shown some signs of leakage if it were the insert I would think.- Thewespaul

Yep, much rather it happen to me. I personally hate driving other peoples stuff, especially driving in traffic worrying about other idiots on the road, but happy I found the issue before it left the following day.- Thewespaul

No smoking cannons that scream to me an obvious issue. From what I can see I think either there was an issue with the gasket at the joint which I circled on the film of the new gasket below which is where the fire ring separated on the bad gasket, or possibly the insert for the coolant passage...- Thewespaul

A bit clearer image shows the head gasket failure a bit better, you can see the piece of the fire ring actually sticking out. We are thinking there was an issue with the fire ring which caused it to separate and push the rest of the gasket out from the inside out.- Thewespaul

Well got the speedo issue sorted, I pulled the motorcraft sensor out of the shop truck and got it installed and it fixed it right. Got the new driveshaft picked up around lunchtime today and got it installed, luckily my measurements were good and it fits perfectly, plenty of room to compressor or extend on the slip joint. Glad youre happy with it, I really like the sensitivity of these bigger pumps. Takes a lot less pedal input to pull up hills and maintain highway speed, your old pump was fluctuating around the 17* mark so Im not surprised this one is quieter, but you may try advancing it a bit more to help drop...- Thewespaul

It came with 6 flanged bolts for the torque converter so it could be installed with a 6 hole flexplate or four hole like the IDIT flexplate. Wish every e40d torque converter had bolts instead of studs, much easier to install and to check clearance between the torque converter snout.- Thewespaul
