    Old 6.9 idi

The 6.9 heads have open water jacket ports that are sealed by the valley pan/ intake gasket. The manual calls for gasket maker to seal the ports. The 7.3 heads have cup plugs to seal the ports. It seems like a potential for coolant to leak into the crankcase on the 6.9 and was addressed on the...

    6.9 block work

is it nessecary to lower the gearbox?

Never dealt with an E4OD but have replaced the clutch on my T19 by chaining the trans to a 4x4 spanning the trans cover opening and dragging it back after removing the transfer case and cross member. You will need to remove the seat and floor covering. I made some alignment dowels from some...

    Yet Another Glow Plug Issue

Look at the GP harness plug between engine and chassis. The two large orange wires (maybe yellow) carry lots of load and the plug tends to melt or corrode and the plug is a weak link.

Have you tried spray polyesters like Slick Sand or Feather Fill? May be the ticket for large areas with minor imperfections. You need a gun with a pretty large tip like a 2.0 but they do a good job on large areas like that. I believe best practice is to epoxy under these products.

    Please help 1984 6.9l

The glow plug controller is in the rear of the drivers side head. It has a harness attached to the top. It is unlikely the harness is not there as it is part of the entire GP harness. There is a drain fitting at the back of the valley pan. It takes a 3/8 drive to remove or install. It holds the...

Does anyone have the official 7.3 ARP stud torque specs and sequence?

To me the line sequence just insures you have double checked all the bolt torque values and not missed one in the first pattern.

This is for 7.3 IDI heads, should be the same as 6.9. Where you live a turbo would be a big help. If you deck the heads it may make the intake hard to install. I had to elongate the bolt holes to get it lined up. If the water pump doesn't leak, keep using it. I have gone through a couple of...

In fairness the camper adds value. Unless that is what you want the number of buyers will be small.

    7.3 OBS for 30k!

https://reno.craigslist.org/rvs/d/northern-lite-cab-over-and/6500597373.html My buddy in Carson City sent me this ad to see what I thought. Are '08 axels better than a Dana 60? Nice looking truck but I have sticker shock.

Just had my rear main seal replaced,

I had a leak at the rear cover to oil pan due to using too little RTV at the corners. You should be able to check if the oil seal is dry as it is above the oil pan joint. My oil seal was dry but I hate leaks and curing mine meant removing the rear cover, so the seal had to be redone anyway. With...

    Hypemax pulse or banks sidewinder

Correct, there are two up pipes on the Hypermax. The drivers side on mine was hard up against the firewall seam even with the flange bent back, so I had to make an additional cut and get creative with a pry bar. I don't tow so never see a lot of boost, maybe 7# climbing a pass, but I can push...

    Rear main seal opinions

Check the sealing surface on the crank. If there is a groove worn in the crank where the seal rides you will need to sleeve it. International sells a seal/sleeve kit with a plastic install tool that can be installed with the rear cover in place. The seal and sleeve are to be installed together...

    6.9 serial number

Here are the changes by serial# for 6.9's Looks like you have a high # so you have all the updates. You may have the 7.3 style rocker arms also, though they were introduced in '87. The earliest 6.9's had a problem with the block cracking if the block heater was used, but you should be good to...

"Rebuilt" 6.9 idi with ARP studs - don't want to ruin this one too!!

Where to begin? The injectors seal at the copper washer so the threads should not have RTV. The cold idle is powered through a temperature sensor by the thermostat. Power is supplied until a set temperature is reached and the sender cuts the power. The plunger on the high idle is threaded and...

I Forgot to Mark the IP gear

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1113735-aligning-the-pump-gear.html Here is one possible option, using plumbers putty on a knife blade to make an imprint of the timing mark. I would probably lose the putty into my oil pan if I tried it.

    Watch those air filters.

Thanks. I added a filter minder to my turbo intake and it always sucks down after I do any hard run like climbing a pass. I just replaced my air filter and will now remove the foam pre filter and see if it helps.

    Project Big Red

I have been a lurker on the SPI forum and Hotrodders bulletin board. Some pretty knowledgeable guys do all their blocking with the SPI epoxy. If you don't have any break throughs you should be able to go to the next step. If inside the recoat window it doesn't need to be scuffed, but it seems a...

    how does this even happen?

To continue the hijack, I have seen stated if the crows foot is at right angles to the torque wrench the leverage and torque is not increased. If the crows foot was placed backward, would the torque be decreased? It seems it would work that way, but the torque at the head of the torque wrench is...

    Parts is NOT just parts

If you are in Northern Nevada I found a shop in Reno to do my machine work(Hewes Performance Machine) He rebuilt IDI's back in the day when they were in ambulances. '87 6.9 should be a good basis for a build though the head bolts are 7/16" rather than 1/2" on 7.3 blocks. I used Mahle pistons...
