    Valley pan

Picked up a pan gasket on Rock auto. Didn't think it was a crush gasket. If I knew that I wouldn't have even asked.

    Valley pan

That was the plan. Why, is that a no no? The pan definitely has been used before me. The little crack was there, so someone had it apart. I never read here anything that would say either yes or no.

    Valley pan

Hey, I was just cleaning up parts while waiting for the call for my heads. I noticed on the corner of the valley pan there is a small tear. It doesn't go into the intake, and for the most part will be covered with rtv. This must have been there, being it came out super easy. The tear goes...

Viton Os, Valve covers and Fuel in Oil

He has a hard head. I was the same way when I was young. He might end up with the '87 6.9 I'm working on right now some day. Stu, where you at?

Viton Os, Valve covers and Fuel in Oil

He's living in PA now, and all his buddies are Ford guys. His one friend even bought my old '91. He is the only one with a Chevy. Can't figure it out. I failed!

Viton Os, Valve covers and Fuel in Oil

Yessir. I have a good supply of small parts. Been saving odds and ends for 20 years of idi's. I think of that too- vehicles being disabled through their computers. But our old iron would be immune. My son is a Chevy guy. :(

Viton Os, Valve covers and Fuel in Oil

Hey Stu, not installing a turbo. I think I have a bad exhaust guide or valve seat. Did a leak down test and confirmed the leak. I wish I was doing a turbo--but you know you can't find those around here. Used in good shape, that is.

Those leaks are such a nuisance. And yeah, if the line doesn't go down square to the injector you can get a leak. Don't over tighten the nut- you can form a groove in the hard line and then it will be hard to seat. From the look in your pics, they look pretty straight. I just pulled my injectors...

    Quick question...

Thanks guys. Just seems easier to take out 4 bolts compared to 16. My exhaust connector bolts weren't rusted so I figured I'd go that route.. Going to pull the heads Friday.

    Quick question...

I'm in the garage pulling the heads on the 6.9. Can I take them out with the exhaust manifolds on? Seems it would be faster. I have a shop crane so weight is no issue. Just wondering about clearance. Thanks

    Leak down test

The tester is a HF, I think it cost $25. The diesel specific one. Diesel Engine Compression Tester 20 Pc. Once you get it you need to see the type of quick connect fittings it has. I think that they are not all the same. I had to buy this SPARC 6pc Inert Gas Quick Connect Kit 1/8" NPT (New)...

    Leak down test

I picked up a fel pro gasket kit, seals and all. Going to pull the heads next week. Need to find a shop crane hoist thing; maybe a neighbor has one. My back isn't up to that weight anymore. First I need to find a place that will do the valves.

    Leak down test

Bronco, I have the valve cover off. I pulled the rockers to close the valves. This is on my 6.9. I sold the 7.3. It sounds like air is going into the exhaust manifold, and I'm getting some sound thru the oil fill. No noise thru the dip stick.

    Proper timing equipment?

I got tired of searching for a tach n time and whatnot, so I picked up this. Sealey TL95 Timing Light Diesel Converter Boxon Amazon. You need an adjustable advance timing light, but you need one anyway if you work on any kind of vehicles. It works.

    Leak down test

So I finally got a hold of some fittings that I could use to make up a leak down tester from a HF compression tester. Back a few weeks ago when I did the compression test all the cylinders were between 475 to 500 psi, except for cyl #2 which was 420. I did a leak down test today on #2 and while...

    Excessive Blowby/Crankcase pressure.

Glazing on the cylinder walls would keep the rings from seating and sealing correctly. My motor was rebuilt 90k ago and was sitting for the last 6 years before I resurrected it. I was running it hard but still have a smoke issue under hard accel. So I'm trying to figure the blowby out too.

    Excessive Blowby/Crankcase pressure.

I wonder if the piston cooling jets atomize the oil too much, creating the mist. I have great compression in my '87 w/6.9. But after it warms up I get a good amount of blowby in the intake. I have a video of the motor running without the valve cover on- looks like it's on fire.
