Has anyone used a circuit tracer?

Has anyone ever used a circuit tracer to find wires in a bundle, locate shorts or opens? Can anyone recommend one suitable for automotive use?

Got a strange problem with my starter

When the engine is room temperature the starter will crank the engine quickly for a couple rotations, then it slows way down, have to crank 15++ seconds to get it to start. When the engine is warm, it starts before the starter slows down. The cheapie digital voltage gauge I have stuck in the...

e4od shows "B solenoid open" on startup, what's up?

I have a '94 E350 with an e4od and a US Shift controller. When I start it cold and put it in gear, I often get a "solenoid circuit open" error. Usually it's the B circuit, sometimes the coast clutch circuit. Because this is the US Shift controller, I can read the error right on the display, no...

What specialty tools do I need for 2 cycle detroits?

My old grader has a 4-71 Detroit, and I'd like to get tooled up to work on it. What specialty tools do I need, besides the Detroit manual?

Trans oil cooler and bypass questions for van

Transmission temps on my ambulance hit 200F coming back toward Fairbanks. I'm thinking of replacing the current, small external oil cooler with a TruCool Max LPD4739, with a thermal bypass. Anyone have any recent experience with the TruCool coolers or their thermal bypass?

Is there a current source for a pre-bled clutch master-slave cylinder kit?

I accidentally posted this first in the tech articles. Is there a current source for a pre-bled clutch master-slave cylinder kit for an '83 F250 with the 6.9 and the T-19 (?or maybe -18?) transmission? I can find the cylinders and the line, but I'm not finding anything that lets me be lazy!

Can anyone recommend a PSOM repair place?

Can anyone recommend a PSOM repair place? There are a lot advertising that service, does anyone have any first hand experience with any of them? I'm starting to think my PSOM may be the cause of my shift problems in the ambulance. I swapped in another used PSOM and the problem hasn't recurred...

Can our IDIs use a Powerstroke tach?

My van doesn't have a tach. It looks as if it should be pretty straightforward to stick an f350 instrument cluster in there, but the ones I'm finding on fleabay say '92-'97, which likely means powersmoke. If I do wind up with a powerstroke tach, will it work right with the signal coming from the...

e4od, VSS and US Shift intermittent issue

I recently bought a US Shift controller and installed it in my '94 ambulance. I like the way it shifts, I like the visibility it gives me into the transmission. It hasn't solved the problem that periodically the trans downshifts to 1st and won't upshift. It was doing this occasionally with the...

Anyone else seeing broken front shock mounts?

My '91 duallie plow truck and my '89 crewcab both have the front passenger side shock mount broken off. The mount is a folded up tab off the side of the top plate of the u-bolts holding the front spring. I'm using the Bilsteins Shockwarehouse recommended for the trucks. Anyone else seeing this...

Hot hot should my e4od run?

I took my ambulance for a test drive with the new US Shift controller. I drove a few miles on flat ground, ambient temp around 50F, running empty so vehicle weight probably around 11,000 pounds, cruising about 50mph. The controller told me the torque converter was locked up must of the time I...

My '89 is dead, what's happened?

Parked it a couple days ago, all was well. Today I turn the key and nothing happens at all. Batteries are still fully charged. I can see that the rod along the top of the steering column is moving as I turn the key. I'm starting to think that the big switch on top of the steering column down...

Swing away spare tire mount spotted

I was up in Fairbanks yesterday, and I saw this in a parking lot. It's a home made rear bumper with a home made swing away spare tire carrier. Looks like two heim joints for the swivel. A flimsy looking latch on the other side, probably sufficient for the purpose. Doesn't obstruct the tail...

What kind of fitting for injector pump inlet?

I want to delete the filter on top of the engine in favor of filters under the cab. I'll use some 3/8 hose direct to the inlet. What fitting do I need to connect to the IP?

What is this electrical thingy on top of the engine?

I'm putting the engine for my Brown Crewcab back together, hooking up the electrical stuff on top, and noticed a little lump on the front end of the passenger side harness. This is what it looks like: This shows it plugged back in, near the #1 injector. Does anyone recognize it?

    Arctic Ambulance

I just bought my first van, a '94 E-350 ambulance. It's been a work truck for a local contractor for years, so it has few miles and probably lots of idling hours on the engine. Seems to be in fair shape, over all. It'll become a little RV for us. Apparently he bought it in the Lower 48 and...

Changing a head gasket in the brown truck.

About a year ago the '89 crew cab started spewing coolant out the front, right, upper corner of the engine. I finally got it into the shop this winter and have pulled the engine. I'm middlin' sure the problem is the head gasket - the leak was kinda visible below the exhaust manifold. I started...

Is this a 6.9 injection pump?

I bought a truck, and it came with some engines and an injection pump. I'm trying to figure out if it's potentially a core for a rebuild. It has a rebuilder's nameplate on it, and the model is given as DB2-4369. From the last 4 digits I'm guessing it's from a 6.9. That's sensible because the...

I just noticed there are loads of cheap zd9 glowplugs on ebay

There're in Motorcraft packaging, some even claim they're genuine. $40/8-pack, free shipping. Do we have any reason to think they aren't bogus?

    Replace a C6 with an e4od?

I just bought an '88 F250 Centurion with a C6. I have an IDI e4od sitting around. What would it take to swap it in to replace the C6? I figure I'd need an aftermarket transmission controller. I'd need to add a button on the dash. Does the tranny just bolt in, no spacers or adapters required...

    Has anyone built a ztse4151?

The international manual says to attach an adapter plate to the side of the engine and bolt that to the engine stand. OTC wants $900 or so for a ztse4151. Has anyone built an adapter to fasten to the motor mount bolt holes and mount the engine sideways on the stand? Got a picture, or...

Anyone in Missouri have a decent rig for sale?

I have a daughter who's in Missouri until June, and she wants to buy a truck down there and drive it back to Alaska. Her budget is about $6k. The truck has to be solid enough to get here from there with no issues. She's going to want me to help with maintenance in the future, so an IDI would be...

Do we have a source for the mesh guard on the intake manifold?

A couple of my engines have damaged mesh intake guards. They've gotten caught on the air filter housing as I removed it, and the mesh has started to come out of the outer ring. Do we have a Ford or Navistar part number, or a source besides the junkyard?

Does anyone have a video of installing a Banks Sidewinder?

I've dug a wastegated sidewinder out of my parts pile, and it looks to be complete, with all the exhaust and intake plumbing. I'll have Russ Repair rebuild and upgrade the turbo, and then it's ready to install...but the installation manual has me cutting pieces off the transmission housing! Is...
