I didnt know how good I had it splitting fir up in Oregon. Moved down to Texas and all I split now is Oak, and Sweet Gum. Really miss splitting fir.......

Sweet gum is the worst. Its like it grows in spirals, you cant just split it in half, you have to take spiral chunks off the side.

Only down side to fir is you go through a lot of it. I usually did 5ish cords a year I would say. That was primary heat in my parents house. After I moved the installed one of those outside wood box's, so they hardly have to split wood. Just load the tractor up with some big ole pieces of fir and dump it in. It burns for days from what I hear.

Can you tell me more about this "wood box" heater?

there are many versions out there

you can see a pic of one in Brads post to, you got to watch. some townships are clamping down on them from people burning trash and smoking out the area.

they can be nice since you can throw in some big stuff and let it burn a long time, it also keeps the mess out of the house.
We have friends north of Spokane, WA who have one of these in their detached shop; they feed it once in the morning and again in the evening. House stays nice and warm.

I'd definitely do it if I had access to the wood, but as some have said above, it's not the best if you have temperature inversions in your area which traps the smoke close to the ground (where you will breathe it like it or not, and it does increase the chances for lung cancer). The newer stoves definitely burn cleaner, though, I will admit that.

I have one of those boilers and love it. I usually load it once a day and it keeps the house and garage nice and warm.

We heat entirely with wood theres no other type of heat in my house. This is the easiest way to cut wood I've found so far especially for me LOL. Then theres a pic of my main lumberjack surveing my wood pile (we already cut and split one pile like this) This pics hard to see but its our wood shed with our wood pile of about 7x9x20. Then a load of wood to take in last us about 5 days
