I have a 94 E350 with a 7-3 IDI and I can't seem to figure out how to get the vacuum pump off! Do I need to pull the pulley? And if so anyone know if the rentals from AutoZone or Advanced will work? BTW, I have some kind of little stabilizer or tensioner piston on the right side of my pulley that's seems to get in the way of getting the bolts out. I can't remove that piston either.
Thanks!

If you get the pulley puller(which you will need later anyway), it will come off much easier. Otherwise, you have to work out all three bolts together, sliding the pump outwards as you go so you have enough room. None of the bolts will come out by themselves.

Thanks for the reply Macrobb. The piston blocks access to one bolt completely. I did take a pump off a truck with no problems inching all bolts out together, but the bus is much harder.
Anyone know if it's a special puller or will a universal work?

It's a power steering/alternator pulley puller :) The one you can rent from Autozone worked fine on mine. Or buy the Harbor Fart one for about $20 and have it on hand.

I can't remember now if I removed the belt tensioner shock for access or not but it shouldn't be hard to disconnect. :dunno

Post a picture.

On the v belt idi vans, I remove the vac pump and bracket together, directly from the front of the head.

I don't know if the serpentine belt idis have the same luxury. This is another reason why I like the v belts over the serpentine.

If you can do it without removing the pulley, I'd recommend that. I had to use a lot of force to pull my vac pulley while in a vice. Also a cheapo Canadian Tire (the Canadian version of Harbor Fart) couldn't get the pulley swapped. So I'd expect it to be an almost impossible task to pull the pulley in a van with the radiator and shroud still installed.

it didn't look like the belt tensioner shock would be hard to take off but with mine it's not going to come off. I can't check it out right now because the bus is broke down away from home but I think the bolt is spinning and I can't hold the nut.

Well that's discouraging! I think I'm going to try to get that pulley off anyway and hope for the best. I pulled the whole bracket assembly off of a truck. It had the Vac pump power steering pump and tensioner on it. Didn't look like I can do that with the van but I will check.

can you post a pic? IIRC, the bracket is only held on with 3 bolts to the head, and one is obscured by the tensioning plate connected to the vac pump. If you loosen the tensioning plate, then it should afford you just enough room to get the plate rotated around to get the third bracket mounting bolt out.

But that is just my speculation, because I'm not familiar with the way the vac pump mounts with respect to the orientation of the serpentine belt. Image below shows this, but ignore all the text and diagrams (for a different article).

Thank you Genscripter
I'll see if I can get to those bolts but I can't post a pic until tomorrow that's as soon as I'll get back to the vehicle. Unfortunately I'm moving at the end of the week so I'm pressed getting stuff together and finishing a bathroom and kitchen before we move and of course I need the bus to move with.
