Trailer Brake Problem...
Well, it sounds like something on your trailer shorted to ground which caused the wiring to overheat and melt. I'd start on your trailer and make sure that you don't have any issues there before going at the truck. Start by checking the resistance of all of your electric brake solenoids...- redmondjp

You got that right! .35A is about ten times too high. Most modern cars run around .030 - .050A parasitic drain, and an IDI should be way lower than that due to the lack of an engine ECM and all of the other electronics that are now standard.- redmondjp

Brake drum questions
The other issue with discs is in rainy conditions when you haven't touched the brakes in a long time - that first second or two before the discs dry off and the pads grab can really get the heart rate up! With drums, this isn't as much of an issue as it is harder for water to get inside the drums.- redmondjp

searching for a connector
+1 on the above. I used to design wiring harnesses for heavy truck and off-highway equipment. So you didn't check either the block or heads for flatness (you don't have to send them out, just use a precision-ground straight edge and a feeler gauge)? That could be it right there. And just to be clear, you did a visual inspection of each cylinder bore for pinholes while it was torn down?- redmondjp

It's all about ease/quickness of assembly at the factory (plus, the rivets don't ever loosen up and rattle like screws and bolts can). GM FWD vehicles starting in the mid-80s had most of the crap inside the door pop-riveted in, including the window regulators! It is a pain the first time you...- redmondjp

Doesn't sound good. Before you tear anything down, do a cooling system pressure test with all of the glow plugs removed. For your air intake, any chance that you could run it into the bed up underneath the toolbox? I don't know if your toolbox is rail-mounted or not; most of those boxes have an airspace underneath of them. Just a thought. And I'd definitely run a full synthetic oil in your turbo lube system...- redmondjp

Another update on the 6.9 rebuild.
On drag race cars, I have typically seen check valves that were used on some AIR systems (the ones with 1/2" NPTF threads and a hex on on end, and a 5/8" hose nipple on the other), tied into the header collector at an angle (which will draw a vacuum on the smaller pipe coming in at an angle) to...- redmondjp
