Yesterday I gave myself a Birthday present I had been promising myself for a long time.

I haven't said much about this, but you guys may recall that I had to take the Moosestang off the road due to an Autolight glow plug that I intentionally installed to sabatoge myself into forcing me to take the Moosestang off the road and replace the 6.9 which was drinking a quart of oil every few days. Well that plan worked, but a little too well. That happened in September of 2010, and it has been parked since! I had previously bought a 7.3 from Jerry Miller in Virginia (a 94' no less), on faith, and was told it ran fine, and my plan was to do that swap in short order. Well, life gets busy and I just never seemed to be able to get around to it. The Moose Wagon has been doing a fine job of getting me to work each day, but even at 20 MPG, I am paying about $600 a month in diesel fuel costs, so getting back to burning WMO is a high priority right now. This has forced me to bite the bullet and get off my butt and do the swap.

This engine has been hanging from my 2 ton shop hoist for over a year! Here you see the new Oil Pan I put on. This one is probably a chinese copy and has a 14mm drain bolt instead of the SAE standard.

In addition to the new Exhaust Valve Stem Seals, valve cover gaskets and new Glow Plugs, the motor also got a new Rear Crank Seal.

Like all my 7.3 IDI's, a Lucky Mod Flywheel that I have turned on the lathe is being utilized.

In the name of science, and to put my money where my mouth is, I'm going with a non sprung 11" clutch disc.

The presure plate and disc are both used items obtained from a fellow board member (forgive me for not remembering who! LOL)

A new National Bearings Throw Out Bearing was installed from Autozone.

The ZF-5 that went on was obtained from EMD Driver (Gary). It's condition is questionable, as the top cover was removed and the reverse tang spring was missing. I did what I could to make sure it wasn't inside the trans, but I'm using it as is. The top cover bolts seem to have been lost by the original owner, and substitutes were used. It shifted fine and checked out operationally on the floor. I filled it with 12 quarts of Mercon V through the shift tower.

Proving once again why we call these "single wire motors" as opposed to the computerized kind, I hold the single wire to the battery post to keep it running.

Now the minutia of small details to work out. Clutch system, manual steering column, various wiring and plumbing chores, shift lever and floor pan, and stripping out unneeded automatic transmission parts. I'll try to keep you posted on how it goes, as I am axious to see what a ZF-5 with 3.08 gears will do!

Tokna had a regular cab dually with 3.08's and a ZF and said he was getting low 20's. The moostang ought to be able to get mid 20's fairly easy I would think?

Nice build. I'm impressed. Wish I had the room for a hanging idi in my tiny shop... I always like what I see in the background of Mel's pics. Trees everywhere. Looks like its way out in the country USA... My kind of country living right there... I also really like Whitmores cabin too...-Drool

Truth be told Gary, I am in a development, but it's not a development like the ones we have today. It's more like a 50 summer cabins in the middle of no where. My property is at the edge, so I have Amish farmland on 2 sides. I'm in one of the corners. My co-worker was looking at that pic and started asking me about all the junk in the background. Yea, it looks like a red neck hell hole back there. LOL I need to clean it up some.

why did yo use a springless clutch disc? i'd figure you're good for mid to upper 20's seeing as my scout with 4.10's and 39.5's can manage 20.... haha

tell your co-worker to shove it where the sun doesn't shine. It's not a redneck hell-hole... it's a garden of inspiration!;Sweet

I don't see any reason why it should get any less than the Night Moose....unless you've got a loose cannon at the wheel.

I was thinking along those nitemoose lines too. I recall something like 29.5 mph home from the 2009 ralley. I have thought about running a cocktail of diesel and atf but I'm just not ready to do this to mu Moose Pump. I guess when diesel reaches 9 or 10 bucks a gallon I probably will move over to waste motor oil and aft....
