Drive shaft U joints

Low speed vibrations can often be caused by improper U-joint angle. I installed a GV overdrive and got a low speed (25-30 mph) vibration. Ford doen't have very good U-joint angles to start with says the local driveline service shop and a shorter front shaft aggravates the situation. My front shaft is only 13" long now and I am working with shimming the transmission mount and carrier bearing mount to try and make it better. Its not perfect yet.

Aight, got the 88's front dshaft out and look at that front joint...

Vice wasn't budgin it.

Needed the sledge, a piece of bar stock, and this custom woodblock.

Just sucks on the amount of rust the '88 has. Me thinks the '84 was laughin at me futzin around with the whole deal in the garage.

Get the ones with the grease fittings.

Vibration

I had a vibration at about 2200 rpm no matter what speed I was going or what gear I was in.
Turned out to be the carrier bearing.
As far as U Joints I havent had luck with Brute Force, The ones I had had no grease fittings.
I use Spicer.
I also have installed a GV and have a low speed vibration now.
It mainly seems its when I lay into it pulling out.

A few years ago, I had a low speed vibration under load--pretty much wen away by 50 MPH--that I thought was a misfire--did all kinds of expensive stuff to the engine--helped a bit to smooth it out, but he vibration stayed there until the rear u-joint just in front of the diff was replaced--shazzam--smooth as a "you know what"!!

Your vibration sounds just like mine. Try making a shim to go under the rear trans mount. I made one out of a piece of 1/8" X 2" flat bar. It helped a little. Talk to GV tech support if you haven't. If you find a total cure let me know what did it.

Get your hands on a u-joint tool that you can use an impact wrench with or get your paws on a hydraulic press.

A little silikroil or PB blaster wouldn't hurt on that rusty stuff either.

If You have a ball Joint removal/install tool it works great too convined with an impact whrench.

I was talkin to 4x4truckingirl yesterday right when I finished the cleanup and without thinkin just said, "I just finished paintin my shaft."

If the total length of a one piece shaft would be 5' or less you can do it. Mine would have to be longer than that and my understanding is 5' is the longest a driveshaft from yoke to yoke should be.

Jim,
I called a driveshaft co. I have delt with in the past.
The shaft would be 6'2" +/- and he said no way.
Even going with a bigger tube he said no.
I guss I will do the shim deal.
