I picked up a 85 volvo 740 gle turbo diesel and volvo used the VW D24T engine in them which is basically a 1.6 IDI like what's found in the rabbits with 2 more cylinders making it a 2.4 liter straight 6. It has the VE pump that's belt driven off the back of the cam and a garret turbo. It's backed by the volvo m46 4 speed standard with a push button overdrive factory similar to a gear vendors style. The car its self is a dumpster all 4 struts are junk and its a wiring disaster. I picked it up for $400 figured why not I made it run decent cylinder 1 intake valve was tight and bleeding off compression so I took the valve lash disc out and put it in the vise and took some material off with a flap wheel on a grinder I probably took a tad too much out because I revved it pretty high and it shot the disc out and screwed up the lifter so I'm searching for one of those. I'm debating swapping the motor and trans into a 2wd Ranger if I do that I will set all the valve lashes on a stand fix any leaks and replace the timing and injection pump belts and idlers etc. It's not very powerful but I've put the power screw t just about a runaway and ground the fuel pin some shimming the intermediate governor spring would be next as supposedly that's supposed to add quite a bit of midrange power. It's defiantly a back burner maybe someday project

I drove one of those from Hamburg to Amsterdam back in 1993. It was slow, but our purchases in Amsterdam made the return trip more bearable. They do not have a reputation for being reliable.
I've read they like to blow head gaskets, I also read you can use rabbit 1.6 head studs to help with that but you have to buy 2 sets or talk arp into selling the quantity needed for the 2.4. The odometer is at 315k miles so it can't be too terrible I'm actually impressed lol. It actually ran very well until it messed up the lifter but that's my fault. I may or may not do something with it someday I shoved it back in our mini junk yard tonight where it will probably spend some time until I part it out or a 2wd mini truck comes my way for the low low to do the swap. I did find a set of used lifters on ebay for a decent price.

I know them inside and out. what do you want to know? I have a bunch of them and a few for parts. but don't expect me to sell much . parts for these are very expensive and hard to get. so i am not parting with much. the fact you think you have low power tells me you need rings. these engines have very soft rings and as a rule you need to rebuild the lower end every 150K miles to have any power. head gaskets only fail by leaking oil and coolant never compression. timing belt maintenance is done when the water pump fails every 65K miles and the rear belt only need to be replaced every 2 front belts.

That's really cool! It has power and cold starts well I don't think the rings are gone its just slow in general like any 80s diesel car nothing like a b230ft. You know a good source for parts like gaskets and timing belts etc? I need to replace that lifter and shim all the valves to spec before I do anything else with it. What have you done for performance modifications? I have a NA intake manifold aswell that looks like it would work well to intercool it. The car is junk if I do anything I'm putting the engine in a mini truck
