I have a guy wanting to trade me a 1995 12 valve single cab automatic for my 1990 f250 7.3 idi extended cab. My truck has a 162,000 the cummins has 197,000 on it he says it it has a hx35 turbo bigger injectors number zero fuel plate. He says it had a built trans put in. Do you think it's a fair trade?

Yep sounds about right, what does the idi need?

Head gasket transmission is leaking atf all over front axle is binding up has TTB. Other than that I did fix it all the way up but i popped the head gasket towing my 8500lbs travel trailer and a four wheeler in the bed. He is willing to throw in 1k on top of the trade and give me head studs he needs the extended cab and I really dont. Side note oil is from the front main seal/timing cover on the cummins so wouldn't be a hard fix.

Just read this all and all it sounds like a decent deal but if it was me I would be a little weary because of the work done
To it with the fuel plate and injectors and turbo upgrades oh and the head leaking coolant it just screams abusive relationship and black eye is the new trans. On the other note a few weekends of time and money and it could be a decent truck

I went and got it and I started tearing this apart so first I got Into the front timing cover ordeal not bad but the gears all look new there was a crack in the timing cover with jbweld on it? KDP was not in the hole so I'm sure it fell out and some maybe swapped out the motor? Put a new front main seal in and gasket maker for the seal on timing cover got it all back on. Now working on pulling the head got the turbo off and the intake horn. Found the radiator was leaking a little so I got a new one for it as well pusher intake and pushers intake horn with the new intercooler pipes. Anyone ever ran a afc live on a 12 valve?

i think the KDP can come out and not hurt anything besides the case. im actually just finishing doing a HG and studs on my 24v and doing a few other things while im in there. did you happen to check if its a 53 block?

Thought the 53 block was a 24 valve thing?? That's why I stayed away from a 24 valve maybe I'm wrong?

yes i think it is mainly a 24v thing but i believe some 12v blocks are 53 blocks but not as problematic. i tried to do as much research as possible before i did my HG and i think i have the Mexican block. the Brazil (53) blocks tend to have some problems tho it doesn't seem to be very common.

I'll have to look at if I get time tonight to work on it hopefully wanting to have it running by Sunday.

Only some of the late year 12v had a 53 block. If that engine is factory original then it won’t be a 53.

Most likely the kdp came loose. Wedges between the cam gear and case. Cracked the case and then fell down to the pan.

You can epoxy the case as a bush fix. To replace the case, you will need to pull the cam.

AFC live works well. Though if you aren’t adjusting power levels regularly, a properly dialed in AFC housing will do you just as well.

I do it both ways in my shop. Up to the customer and their needs/wants.

When a 12v comes in that I don’t know the history on, there are a few things I reccomended. Obviously you’re already doing some of this. I’m just listing this for someone that finds this thread and isn’t already doing the work.

Kdp
Verify and set timing
Valve lash
AFC and plate adjustment
New overflow valve
Check fuel pressure
Check crankcase breather for restriction

Trans-
TV cable adjustment
Band adjustment
Check line pressures

Since you’re pulling the head
While the head is off, have it vatted and mag’d.
Deck the head
Check the deck on the block
Bottom tap the the head bolt holes
Use a Cummins headgasket-please
O-rings optional

So I got the head off and the head gasket had rotted out. Had my friend who works for the machine shop come on over he checked the head and block deck said everything was with in spec and we decided to put it back together. Well I left to go get some new hoses and someone put the push rods in the wrong wholes and went to tighten everything down and it bent the push rods so I have new push rods on the way. Everything is fine I checked. But i had a question on the down pipe with the clamp. Anyone ever had issues getting it back together? It's being a big pain in the a$$ right now.
