I need to clean up a rear end and I'd like to plug the breather hole on the left axle shaft so no water gets in. It's bigger than 3/8-16 and smaller than 7/16-14. Maybe a 7/16 fine thread?

I don't know what size it is without looking at it myself but a cork from the hardware store would do the job too. Look in the nuts n bolts area.

It's 1/8 NPT {pipe thread}

IMVHO ---do not plug it!

Just run a longer hose. All you will need is a barb fitting and some carb/vacum vent hose from either the big box stores or local parts house.
The hose can be 6 foot long if you are that worried about water getting in!
But if you are running that deep, you will also need to snorkle the t/case and tranny vents, and front diff as well!

Plugging off will only trap the heat and eventually lead to seal failures!

dont plug it permanantly or the seals will go from the expansion with the heating and cooling.

if you are just covering it to clean it get a 1/8 pipe plug
