Cleaning parts is what I've been doing mostly. That's the problem with old vehicles, everything is all dirty, rusty, or paint chipped and peeling off. So I've been at the varsol tank and then the wire wheel. It's not fun work. I'd rather be bolting up nice new shiny parts. :) But progress has been made. In fact, I was so inspired by IDIoit's powder coated valve covers, that I decided to paint some stuff on my engine.

So without further ado, here is the 2003 Black Gold edition 7.3 PSD.

The valve covers were beat up and had a few dents in them. I hammered them out the best I could. I think it looks pretty good. :)

Thanks for looking.
Where did you get the Gold paint? And could you post the part number?

I've heard others dis'ing Krylon paint, but I've always had good results with it. There are two coats of paint on the parts.

thats cadilliac gold!;Sweet

if you clear coated them after paint, they would really pop.

also helps in longevity.

its not really the paint, its the prep and throughness that makes people hate on krylon.

they take greasy nasty stuff and expect them to come out perfect ;Really

You're right on the prep work. Varsol tank first. Dried them with the air hose, then spray them down with brake cleaner. Sanded them down with 100 grit sandpaper. Then washed them with soapy water and rinsed them with HOT water so it would evaporate quickly. Fresh Nitrile gloves to handle them, and then 2 coats of paint. One coat per day.

Front teardown

A little more progress today. I had the day off, so I got after the front end to get it ready to accept the Black Gold engine. The more I tear it down the more crap I find; broken parts & rust...lots of rust. I need to get me one of them beautiful California trucks. ;)

when i did the PSD in the 89 F350,
i zipscrewed a piece of 1/16" aluminum to the firewall, took a 3" piece of pipe 4 feet long, and welded a big ***
ball bearing to, about 4" in diameter, pounded and pounded.

kinda like a big *** ball pien hammer, worked great!

Turbo time

Made little more progress. It's slow going, but I figure if I can do even a little bit here and there, it's better than nothing.

It's the little things that get you.
So with the EBPV delete on the turbo outlet, I figured no problem, I'll just go to the auto parts store and pick a 3/4" freeze plug for the hole. I live in a big city, should be easy to find. Um...no. Not unless I want to buy a whole freeze plug kit that comes with one 3/4" plug. No thanks. Went on-line and got the NAPA part number: 219-3038. That should make it ease for the parts man. Nope. Apparently that is the US part # from the US web site. The part number on the Canadian website is different, and on top of that it's not the part number that the store uses. ***! They could get them however...from Edmonton. I had to get a whole bag tho. About $15. for 12 pieces. I can live with that. I order a bag of them and a bag of 7/8" Expansion Freeze Plugs too. If anybody in Calgary needs them. I got em. :)

Test fitting the 4" down-pipe. No V-band clamp. Doh! Ordered it Saturday. It had to come from Ontario!
You get the general idea though...

Nice nice.
So I think you may have put the ccv on backwards.
Which fuel system are you going to run? You can get rid of the fuel bowl in the valley. Looks a lot better.

Good eye on the ccv. I'm considering a Road Draft Tube and then using the port in the intake for propane or HHO injection. :sly
Or perhaps run a vacuum in the crankcase. The brother in-law has a drag car that has a belt driven vacuum pump that he says pulls 10" vaccum.
Figures its worth 35 HP. :dunno He's turning low 10s - high 9s in the 1/4 mile. Must be doing something right. I should have asked him how many 10ths it's worth. LOL

I was just planning on running the stock fuel bowl for now. Maybe try putting a BB under the fuel regulator spring. I should probably measure what the fuel pressure is before I start modifying it.

On the other hand the for what the auto parts place charges for a fuel filter, I might go get some filter heads and run some big low micron filters.
Going to need a regulator then. It does clean up the valley though. Trying to keep it "stock" looking as possible. :D

Nice.
While there's room, you can rip out the nasty fender insulation. Unless you just want to keep it. Mine was soaked in powersteering fluid.

Down-pipe disappointment.

We had a winter storm here on Tuesday. My son and his girlfriend were coming back from the farm at night during the blizzard. He was driving the cube van, she was driving a 1999 Sunfire. She hit black ice on the highway and went thu the median cable barrier.

Result:

She managed to walk away without a scratch!

Dealing with that took up some time. I know, excuses, excuses...

Well, the 4" down-pipe is not going to fit without more firewall modifications, which I will not be making at this time. Here are two pictures of a 3" down-pipe. It just fits.

Of course the 3" down-pipe doesn't fit the newer turbo. Doh!

The newer turbo will be getting a wicked wheel upgrade. Read: I will be putting in an impeller out of a GT38 into the GTP38 turbo. Older GT38 impeller is on the right.

The GTP38 wheel looks a little dusted.
So is that the stock obs GT38 wheel, or one of the actual wicked wheels?
There is a difference.
