After sitting a couple nights of low 20s, I decided to finally use ny block heater. It has a new cord I bought recently.
I plugged it in and went and did some other things, getting ready to go. I was outside nearby with a garden hose and sprayer "just in case", keeping an eye out for fire.
20-30 minutes later, I returned to the engine and heard humming. I quickly unplugged it, but it seemed to help. The truck started very easily on one glow plug cycle without any stuttering (broken cold advance sensor connection).
So I guess its working ok. It could have been humming at first but maybe traffic was drowning it out, or I just didn't lean in like I did at the end when I was just looking down in the compartment.
So, is that normal?
