I
have seen numerous IDI engines that will fire right up, idle about ten seconds, then die; after that, not even s stick of dynamite will start them, until they bring the fuel back up from the tank

Mine would never fire right up....so to speak. My glow plugs haven't been working for years, I would use a snort of ether for the first start of the day. After that it would start right up (less than 3 seconds of cranking) once it had been warmed up. Yesterday evening, when I got home from work, I went over to my truck, turned the key and let the fuel pump run for about 5 seconds, than put the pedal on the floor and cranked over the engine, after about 6 seconds of cranking she fired right up. No ether, no glow plugs, and the truck hadn't run for 24 hours before that. I was pretty impressed with that. My old 86 F350, with the better part of 1/4 million miles on it, will start up faster than my dads '01 GMC Duramax.
