I checked out that link, and found the labour costs a little high. I've been quoted 60 hrs Cdn for the labour to swap into a chevy.

I don't have the know how, or the shop to do the swap myself, so I'll end up having to pay for a chunk of the labour, and doing what I can on my own, like the lift and chit.

Hey guys this swap isnt that difficult at all! I'm in the process of installing a 1989 5.9Cummins in my truck I have. Talked to the guys at FordCummins and they say that when you buy the mounts they give you a direction book on how everything is done. Sounds like anybody with any mechanical skills can do it then I think. As for the shop I have a barn but spend more time working on my trucks outside! Hey Bill I take it your truck has the four speed and not the five. My truck is coming along slow just because I really dont need it right now and I'm planning on pulling it so I'm rebuilding almost everything! Heres My baby by the way!

On second thought why dont you just dump the money you were going to do in the cummins swap into building up that IDI? It can be done. I know were you can get all the parts you need!

dazedandconfused - Don't want to bust your bubble but the fordcummin.com pamphlet you get contains very little detail on how to hook your Cummins to the Ford. I would be willing to sell you my pamphlet from them for $5.95 because it's not worth the $20 the sell for.

Its still not that hard of a conversion, I have already put this engine in an 84 Chevy once before but to much motor for the truck! If you have ever taken a motor out or swaped a small block for a bigblock you can do this conversion. All you really have to hook up to get it running is a live wire to the fuel pump and your starter and alternator. Really its pretty dam simple!

P.S. If you dont want to get into that build the IDI for racing or pulling or something, they are damn good engines!

Transmission

Has anyone used the C-6 Trans with their Cummins engine swap?A friend of mine did but wasn't too happy with it,he claimed it was geared too high for the Cummins and the low end torque was hurting his converter.

Its not that they are geared to high it is that they are not a lockup converter trans! Without having a lockup it seems to strugle on take off with a load. This is the same with the early dodge transmissions. Mine always seemed to act like it was slipping but was just building up to the stahl and building boost. it was great once you got moving though or built boost! He may need to have it overhauled though. Have it built like a racing transmission in a dragcar and he will be much happier. Who built his convertor? Did Suncaost do it or is he using a stocker?

If you know anyone interested in a Cummins engine let me know, I have one for sale!

There are a couple of folks knowledgeable in hopping up IDIs. It CAN be done.

Ken at Diesel Performance Specialists would be a good person to call.
