which oil would you run

I tend to like the slippery kind as well.....

You'll get a lot of different answers, better is what You prefer. Delro and Rotella and good ones. Now personally I use motorcraft from the local advance autoparts at $9 for 5qt jug.

Seriously though, if you have a fresh engine that doesn't burn much oil any would be OK ( and I'd have to agree with the Amsoil recommendation ) but for an older engine, the Delo will hold up better. On older engines, the Delvac and Rotella have a habit of burning off faster.

It could be true...I have thought about trying some in my engine, my only worry is that it has just about only seen Rotella most of its life. It still shows good oil readings, but especially after that first 2 quarts burn off and I have to add some it usually goes through quite a bit of oil, from leaks, blowby, vanishes into thin air..

After years and years of running all kinds of big trucks and smaller diesels, I can say without a doubt that the Delo will not burn off as fast as the others ( non synthetics, that is ) Rotella will cook off fairly quickly if there any ring wear at all, The Rotella and the Delvac clean a bit better, but they both burn off quicker.

The gumby brand no name stuff and Coastal and most of the other cheapies will cook off REAL fast, but won't make much difference if it's leaking out onto the ground as fast as you pour it in.

If you're loosing it more to burning, giving the oil system a good cleaning can help a bunch. Diesel rings get gunked up with soot and other nasties over time and get sticky. This can lower compression and cause excess blowby and oil consumption. Best thing I've found is running a couple of treatments of Auto Rx I've revived quite a few old oil inhaling diesels with that stuff, it does wonders for seal leaks too.

Rottella T 15W-40 hands down, we sell thousands of litres of it at our shop every year for a reason - it's good stuff. I've seen engines with over 1,000,000 miles torn down for a rebuild and there was still crosshatch in the liners. Tear down an engine run on Rotella and then tear one down run on the other brands - no comparison - the Shell engine is always much cleaner. In my shop - the consensus seems to be that if you've always run shell switching to something else will cause leaks with out a doubt.

I run it in my IDI, mostly city/suburban driving with 410,000km on the clock. A lot of start-stop driving and idling in traffic. My truck has used about 1 quart in the last 1800 miles and it's due for an oil change this week....I suspect most of that was leaked onto the pass side exhaust manifold......The best part is I can get it for $2/L my cost at work so doing a service on the F250 is cheap along with the fleetgaurd filters we carry.
