What you may like to do is time the engine to 8.5 and make a center punch mark in the joint line between the pump and the gear housing. Then time it again to say 9.5 advance and make another center punch mark. Now you have 2 known timing locations. You can now change back and forth without ever using a meter again. You can even remove the pump from the engine and reinstall it and know exactly what the timing is because of the marks you made. Just do not think this will work on any other pumps. No 2 pumps are rebuilt with the same timing in them Mel has discussed this several times in this forum. These is plenty of room for more than a couple of timing marks in this joint line I spoke of. I recommend this to everyone that rents a meter from me. Then they can try different timing degrees well after they have returned me meter. I know that takes meter funds out of my rental program but its what I give back that counts like many others on the forum that continue to give back.
