Unusual behaivior.....

My IDI seems to want to stall when I let off the fuel to shift gears....This only started today.....Won't fall back to idle from say 2000rpm or so. The fuel filter is new a week ago, 2 full tanks of fuel and the stock mechanical lift pump is maybe 4 or 5 months old. The truck will fire right back up after it stalls and idle's at 650rpm. I changed 2 GP's today, I wonder if I disturbed a wire or something?....Wierd and annoying as hell when you are trying to plow snow as I was tonight. I did have the fuel filter off this afternoon to inspect for water in the fuel...I wonder if I have some air stuck in the filter???

I'd be inclined to start with a fresh filter and go from there

Mine does the same thing every winter, add a couple of oz of Power Service and it will stop doing it, I think it is the winter blends of fuel, not enough lube in it.

This just started overnight and I used Howe's fuel conditioner all winter...The fuel filter might have 200KM on it. I'll purge the shrader in the morning and see what happen's.

Common problem - governor weights are getting sticky, or something like that - empty the filter of diesel fuel and fill it with Diesel Kleen or SeaFoam, that should clean up the guts of the IP and restore proper low-speed operation of the governor.

I agree with others, its a sticky governor. Any powerful lubrication diesel additive will clear it up. I have always used cheap automatic transmission fluid and it works every time for me. No need to take the filter off if you don't want to, just add whatever suppliment you use to the tank and drive it.

You can carefully remove the top cover from your IP and exersize the govenor assembly, and hit some of the pivot points with WD-40 if the "through the fuel" method doesn't work. Research installing the top cover if your unfamiliar with putting it back on. Extreme caution is required.

Plus 2 on that. I had two "good" IP's that sat dry for a long period of time (during my project build) and both had metering valve issue and both died soon after. Exact same issue you are having. Yes, lube will help, but for my two IP's this was just a bandaid to get me by before they met the great rebuilder in the sky.

I'll try some cleaner in the Filter. I have been running Howe's all winter but with the water that I had in the filter last week it may have caused this....Diesel Kleen, who makes that? I'll fire a new filter on it too. It was a pain trying plow with it last night and drive it to work this morning.

how old is your pump? maybe the govoner assy. is just getting worn out, time for a moose pump

I have no idea how old the injection pump is - could be the original with 427,000KM on it....I put a quart of ATF in the tank and filled the fuel filter full of it before I left work - no change in the way it's acting now that I'm home....I'm going to PM Mel for some top cover removal tips - I have nothing to loose so I might was well take a look before I order a new IP from IH next week.

How long was it running since the ATF was in the fuel? mine took about 2-3 hours before it cleared up.

Maybe a 1/2 hour. What bug's me is that it started almost instantly which makes me think something is weak or worn in the IP. It worked fine all the way to work yesterday and then **** it started acting up when I left work.
