Throttle return

I have an 86 6.9 idi and cannot get it to idle at the correct rpm to save my life. I replaced the return springs and found that it does not go all the way down on it's own with the springs, it's like it has a small catching point. Anyone dealt with this before or have an idea?

Pull the throttle cable off. Verify it goes back all the way down. If so, replace the throttle cable. Dorman makes a replacement that's not too spendy.
If it still doesn't go back down, check that the high-idle solenoid isn't interfering. If it's not, your spring may be in the wrong spot.

How's the movement of the throttle without the cable on?

Like posted above, if it is normal..... a simple cable will fix it. If not, keep looking at the IP.

Fast idle solenoid (like posted above).
Advance piston arm... does it move smoothly with the throttle?.... the cam on that moves the arm have damage/garbage affecting action of movement?
Does the advance piston move freely in the bore?

Had a bizarre issue with the advance piston bore on one of my IP's. A small fleck of trash got into bore and prevented good movement of the piston. It only allowed 1/4 throttle. Very annoying, but easily fixed.
