tacometer trouble

I have a 1994 F-250 7.3 turbo,with a standard 5 speed,Is the tac. electric or cable, when the truck is running the tac. does not start to move the needle until it is around 1500 to 1800 RPM, any ideas. Beaver55

It may be the sensor, the large nut with 2 wires in it next to the oil fill neck. Check the connectors and remove it and clean the tip of the sensor. Also check the wires to see if the insulation is cracked or missing. You can also try unplugging the dash connector to see if that helps. If nothing changes, then it's time for a new sensor, about $50 from Ford.

there is a sensor on the side of the ip gear cover. the sensor just screws in and there is a pigtail to disconnect. when mine went out, it wouldnt read at idle, anything over that and it would. your symptom is common also. i think i paid around 65 at the dealership. it is a factory only part.
