One of the guys at work has a '93 IDI
The tach doesn't work. Where does it get
it's signal from. Don't have any idea if it's
ever worked before. That's all the info I have.

The sender for the tach is in the top right side of the timing cover. Got 2 wires coming out of it. Make sure they're clean and exposed wires aren't touching together.

It looks like a big nut, sort of pointing towards the drivers side of the engine bay.

Don't forget to check the wiring connection as it lays across the top of the engine and it can be bad after all these years.

I forgot about this thread.
Need to let you guys know it was the sender
itself that was nfg. He says it hasn't worked for the
last two years. So for $50 it can stay broken. cookoo LOL

You didn't say what trans the truck has. If it's a manual the tach doesn't matter, if it's an automatic the computer uses the tach sensor to shift and a bad sensor will ruin the trans.

Just had this happen with the truck in my sig. One day the tach just didn't move anymore. After a while it would blip up then fall back to 0 then sometimes it will work right. Whats wrong?

Fixed it just a lose nut on the silinoid on the fender.

I guess I really didn't fix it. I did have a lose nut on the silinoid on the wheelwell and it seemed to work when I started it up to see. When I went back out to leave work the Tach dosen't work anymore.

I was wondering about that because the solenoid on the fender should give other problems besides just the tach. Typically on these older trucks I would check the wiring first then if that looks good replace the tach sender.
