So some other thoughts.

1) Bring some other fluids. Brake, coolant, oil, power steering, etc. You said you want to drive it on the trailer, so you will need everything to function.
2) Some arcing thoughts.
a) The ground wire on my 7.3 pickup hits the engine block on the passenger side next to the oil pan as I recall. (Possible drivers, but I believe on the passenger side.) Could be yours is loose, corroded, etc. So arching due to high amperage of starter draw on a week connection to ground.
b) The starter wire heads down to the starter from the solenoid on the passenger side. The battery cables seem to corrode and split inside on these vehicles, so perhaps your wire to the starter has done the same and now is arching on something metal.
c) Your starter cable is loose or corroded on the starter and is arching/smoking. You can try to clean it and see if you can now start.
d) Your starter is actually toast and the power is finding a least path of resistance to ground.

Good luck! Sounds like a cool project.
