If you replace the stat put a small piece of paper in it to block it open slightly. This will help prevent an air pocket.

Yes, and it works so much better with it missing.


So an air bubble is equal to a blown hg?
That isn't necessarily being "extremely hot" either.

In my experience, an air pocket will escape during warmup, not usually once it's hot - everything will have already expanded by then.
A bubble or three, sure. If you get constant bubbling(which is what I was thinking of when I made that post), or a bunch of bubbling right after "overheating" it, you might well have a partially blown head gasket - that's what mine did for about a year(slowly getting worse) before blowing to the point of coolant out the exhaust and a "boiling" overflow at idle.
