First off, sorry to the moderators but from previous experiances, the IDI folks seem to have more answers than other.....guess since we have to actually use wrenches on our engines, not soldering irons and Multimeters.... ;Poke

Has anyone out there ever put a 300 I6 gasser in a jeep.Thought about getting a 1974 postal jeep(DJ5) with blowed up AMC engine(they are asking $500 with VG body).Found a 84 300 with 3Spd tranny out of a truck for $200.I know the 300 is 8" longer than the 242AMC.Has anyone ever attempted to do this?Looking for a cheap replacement for the Falcon(F250) and don't want a cookie cutter car.I want something more....Me!Something I can tinker with on the weekends that gets decent fuel mileage(said decent not great!),Don't mind getting the interior dirty(Work in a machine shop cutting cast iron....Lots of dust, grease, oil, unknown slime!),and won't feel bad if I cut a hole or two for special additions(Muh Ha ha ha ha).

Lastly,Anyone know what was hooked to the back of a 300 in 84 with 3 gears?Mechanical,Hydrolic, internal, external actuated clutch fork(which one?)?

A DJ5 is a 4cyl right? There's good and bad points with this idea. Good....the 300 will climb right up a tree. I had many 300's in the fleets and they are a stump pullin' motor. Even had a few hooked up to a NP5. Was told by the company owner to yank them out when the 75+ tickets started coming in. Down side.....these are TRUCK motors. They weigh "almost" as much as our 7.3's. Your conversion jsut might kill the frame on the little jeep. We won't even go near what it will do to the springs....
Suggestion....if you want something "different", find a wrecked cherokee with an injected 258-6 and transplant the engine and wiring into the DJ5. Been there, done that. Just watch out for high speed cornering, they barrel roll real easy :D

actually, the Ford 300 weighs less than the factory AMC 242(also I6).Per the spec sheets the Ford is just a shade over 400 Lbs.Just a tidbit of info if you ever rod a 300,The rockers are interchangeable between a 351....

You got the facts printed in front of you....I stand corrected. yes, I do know about the rocker interchangability. I'm just suprised that the 300 as big as it is, weighs less. I guess that its the size that gives engine stands a good workout.

well, the 300 is Tall,Skinny, and long. The CG would be farther out and higher when on a stand.

As for the Barrel rolls,I already planned to put a Cage inside the body(more places to mount cool stuff....guages,lights,Nos bottles.......

All I know about the 300 is that they don't die! I got 260K on my 92-150 and she's strong and dependable (enough to take me into the 3rd world and back 600 miles a week). I'll never know how many miles I can get out of her since recently the odometer now reads "Error".

just for thought, I saw an older Jeep with a Mercedes 4 cyinder diesel. Good torque and still a small engine. Not sure on the weight, but it shouldn't be that much more than a 6 cylinder gas.
