Hi,

Thanks in advance for all the great info. I just bought a new air filter WIX for my 6.9. It has a foam 'prefilter' wrapped around the outside of the filter; is this normal? I had a '92 7.3, and I do not remember that motor having this style air filter. Thanks for the heads up.

I used those on my 7.3 before I installed a turbo on it. I know there are two kinds with and with out the foam or strap around it.

Those are made to make the paper filter last longer. You can usually take off the foam filter and wash it out.

The pre-filters are fairly common on riding lawnmowers.

I bought the K&N for my van. Simply because NOBODY had the filter. Not the parts stores, not the dealer. I didn't want to go through that every few months.

I'm not sure if the pickups and vans use the same filter...
