Howdy Boy's, First off happy Easter to all out their! I have a couple pinhole leaks in my rear tank, i know i need to replace the tank but for now i plan on running a couple sheet metal screw's up into the hole's and put some good old jb weld around the area for a quick fix. What i would like to know is the truck was hard starting, took some cranking to get her fired, could this be from the tank leaking? Also once i got her started she really smoked( blue-whiteish) for quite some time after and was running like she wasnt hitting on all cylinders. After about 10 or 15 min. she would run like a bear. Would that leaking tank cause this problem? Also where is a good place to buy a tank from? Can it be replaced with a plastic tank? I took one half of the skid plate off to check the tank ( thats when i found the tank leaking) and i see no strap's holding the tank in place. How is the tank held in place? How much of a job is it to replace the tank?

Happy Easter to you too! I like your "Fix" for the pin holes.. I used that fix years ago, on my 77 Firebird. The hard starting and rough running sounds more like air in the fuel system. Hole in the tank would have no effect on the running. You'll probably need a new return line kit, to fix the air intrusion problem.
As far as the tank goes, I believe it is only held in place, by the two skid plate halves. That's how my 87's rear tank is. I don't know about a plastic rear tank either. My 93 has a plastic front and steel rear tank. The front could have been replaced at one point, seeing as how the skid plate for it has holes rusted through it.
When I dropped the rear tank on my 87, I removed both skid plates and had my son hold it for me. I was able to disconnect both lines and the sending unit wires. I then lowered the passenger side enough to take the filler hose off of it.
I messed up, when I replaced the tank though. I couldn't get the inside hose to go into the tank properly. I proceeded to cut said hose, to make it fit..
First time I fueled it up, I learned what that hose was there for!Camarogenius

I may be selling my rear tank soon, if I can find a set of saddles. I don't know if the 450 rear tank will interchange or not. My rear tank has a big plastic ring that holds the sending unit in.

Both my tanks sprung leaks from pinholes under where the straps are (2wd trucks have straps, 4x4 use the skid plates), so I just made some patches from rubber pieces and glued them on with black RTV, the straps are pressing on them so even if the RTV lets go the holes will still remained sealed, but so far it's been like 8 or 9 months and the RTV is holding up great.
On the plastic tanks - yes you can use plastic ones, it's actually recommended for a 4x4 truck that you plan on keeping for a while, as mud likes to pack between the tanks and the skids and rust out the steel tanks. Better yet, you can run a Bronco tank as a rear, they are 37 or 39 gallons so very nice for road trips and such
