looking for IDI, what to look for what to expect

im lookin for an IDI to trade my 99 24 valve for. if anyone wants to trade lemme know. what should i look for in these engines and what type of power should i expect, i live in new england and will be haulin landscape equipment, aboud 3000 pounds, snowmobiles, 3000 pounds, and haulin anything i can throw in the truck. so let me know what i should expect and any common problems

IDIs are great motors. They are very sturdy as long as they have been taken care of. the 6.9 and 7.3 are the same blocks. both great motors. im going to warn you right now that you will not get the kind of power out of an idi motor that you can get out of your 24v. people are going to hate me for saying that but its the truth. These motors and trucks for that matter are long lasting well built vehicles. again with the proper maintenance in mind. certain years and idi engines had there little problems here and there such as a weak spot in the block near the block heater. With an idi you have glow plugs. with a good glow plug system you should not have too many problems with them. most people will run into problems with them when they go cheap with the plugs themselves. or just worn out parts due to many years of use. autolite and champion glow plugs 99% of the time will pop and go down into the head. with your 12v you have a heater grid. (which 99% of the time unless in the - degree weather ever come on). I do not know what year they started the factory turbo (92)??? but before that they were all non turbo. the biggest upgrade you can do is to add a turbo. Banks and ATS both make systems for the non turbo idis. It is a huge increase in power with about a max or 15 or so psi (and that's pushing it without head studs) just some things to look at. i loved my idi and would still have it today. but i wanted to have my favorite motor (12v) in my favorite truck (ford) cheers

IDI's in general are hell for stout, and damn dependable. Most common things needing attention are Starter, Water pump, and Thermostat. Other than that, it's mostly just standard diesel maintenence.

damn thanks, i think im gonna be trading my dodge for a chevy 6.5 diesel. and all ik is the injection pump on those goes, but this one has a new one with a remote PMD cooler. any problems i should look for?

IMO i wouldnt trade for no 6.5. never heard anything good from those except good fuel mileage. I know where a 93 f350 ext cab 7.3 idi non turbo 2x4 zf-5 is that you can trade for. its the truck in my avatar. its not my truck anymore but the guy who has it is wanting to trade me back because he wants a 4x4 again. if your interested in it pm and ill get you pics and details.

well nah i cant. i need a 4x4 in new england, i work with a few framers who run 6.5s up and down the state, out of state and work and haul with it constantly and never had any problems. 2 of em recently upgraded to 09 duramaxes because they got a truck with a sticker of 50k down to 40k.. a 6.5 IMO i never heard anything bad about so far, im around gmc diesels, and isuzu diesels and duramaxes damn near every time i go to work, maybe youd think a plumber like me would learn a little somethin on the GM side of things since there is a 96 w5 in my driveway.. lol

if you want a ford diesel,id get a f250 powerstroke or a 80's model f250-350 with a 6.9 watch the heads cause they blow head gaskets easy
