Internal Vs External Voltage Regulator

So, its like this. I'm changing my 89 crew cab to serpentine belts and will need a differant alternator from a 92 motor. Does this mean I will be changing from my external voltage regulator alternator or does the 92 use an external voltage regulator also. Any other things I will need to know like maybe the alt plug is differant or what. Thanks....

I think '92 is the transition year. I have seen 92's with a serpentine. Mine is an early '92 and still has the multi-belt system and external regulator. Not sure if the switch to serpentine coincides with the internally regulated alternators.
