IH Scout Diesel Noob advise

Hey fellas, a good friend of mine gave me his 84' 6.9 motor, I realize a donor truck would be best, until that comes along I am trying to source stuff together. Im looking for advise to complete the drivetrain. I tried looking for a FAQ, looking for info. Anything to look for in ideal candidates? For tranny's I have have zf5, and ? I heard the 460 gasser tranny will work but cant confirm it. Trying to find info like most years the transfer case was driver side drop so I can start hunting a front D60, or which ones to avoid, etc. Lots of info on here, just trying to get through it all thanks for the help.

The 460 trans won't just bolt up, but it can be made to fit. A coup[le of members have done it. Search for the "typ4 mod".

Yep, talk to jon. He is running a t19 four speed to a divorce mount np205 pass side drop running chevy 1 ton axles. But his is a terra so the wheelbase is longer

Hmm...let this one slip through the radar.. lol my terra is the 118" wb so it gave me some more room, I went 6.9/t19/205 with a pair of 60s. The 205 is divorced with pass side drop. Might be easier to find the t19 and adapt a dana 20 to it, as one guy on the binderplanet did. I would like the od in the zf but I hear big tires beat em up.... the only downfall with my 205 is it hangs a little low, but it all works out well. Any questions hit me up!

Thanks, I really want the OD, is there a better option than the ZF? I really have my eye out for the mid 60's travelall for this build but they are harder to find. So Im may end up putting this in my Terra like your, maybe not quite so tall

NV4500...but you're gonna pay....$$$! i really didn't want mine soo tall, but i had the 4" lift springs installed, not going to swap em out for flat stock ones, or SUA a pair of 60's! oh and i suggest a 2" body lift it really helps out. so that's why i got sooo much lift, 33's looked lost so it needed 37's! what rear gear raito you thinking? i have 4.10's with 37's and it's comfortable at 65. any lower gear ratio with smaller tires you'll be screaming. (so will the motor!)

going with SOA, on 2.5" chevy stock lift. 4.10 with 35's with the OD should be golden, I take it the nv4500 needs an adapter to the 6.9?

Yea OD will work good then, mine would be wound out with 35s. They make a NV4500 kit for the 6.9/7.3 comes with the clutch and stuff.

Unfortunately, if you price it all out, it comes out to over $1000 just to get it to bolt up. That's the reason I still have an NV4500 sitting in my garage doing nothing.

I have read his write up, good stuff. What is your plan for the traveler? Is there a build thread yet?

I just got my Traveler home over the 4th of July weekend. It had been sitting 12 hours away in South Florida for some time. My plans for it are a 6.9 turbo with a c6, and most likely Ford straight axles underneath it. I was going to go with a 6.2 / nv4500 / chevy axles, but Jon helped convince me to go with a 6.9 instead. I had a good donor truck lined up, but that fell through, so now I need to find another one. I haven't even started tearing it apart yet, but I do plan on doing a full build thread when I find enough time and energy to start the project.

You know... if you wanted to take a little road trip up north, there's a '59 Travelall up in Spokane, WA for sale. I've wanted to go get it for a few months now, but I have no way of efficiently getting up there and back, even with friends in the area. Just look it up on Spokane Craigslist and search for "International".
