I want upgrades for a 6.9l

Hey all, I bought the truck, 86 F250 6.9l. Thanks for all the help.

Well, now I have piles of questions, but to start, what would the exhaust sound like without the muffler. Anyone know a place to buy a used turbo kit for this truck?

What about some thoughts for a flatbed, a where to purchase a used one. Ay general ideas?

Any thoughts on upgrades would be great, thanks!!!

Oh, and I was reading about turning the fuel pump, does that work on the 6.9?

no muffler is loud. no muffler and 14" air filter is real loud. with my experiences unfortunately, there isn't enough flow of exhaust to shorten it up to the rear doors of my truck and leave it with no ****, she would give a horibble noise when into it. i just threw on a glasspack and kicked it out to the side. it helped in the power and lowered my EGT's, and running temps durastically when driving for a min of 10 mins. flat bed sounds awesome i was thinking about putting one on my diesel. you can find them at yards. new, your talking $1500 from what i've seen.

No muffler=very loud. you can get away with no muffler if you run a turbo becouse the exaust turbine will quiet it down some, an added plus you can hear the turbo spooling better ohhh yea. My plans are a turbo, no muffler (or at the most a strait through design like dynomax bullet) and stacks. shes going to sound bad ass

Well I reckon the flat bed is an aquired taste. I think they are ugly and would never have one on anything but a work truck. If you have any fabrication skills or know someone who does you could just make one.

Yea you can turn up the injection pump but on a non modified engine I dont think it will help, I dont know for sure though maybe someone who knows could chime in on that one

Turning up the pump on a N/A IDI will help out power a bunch, but it would be very easy to melt your pistons if you went overboard and didnt have/didnt watch your EGT gauge. That being said if you turn the pump up it is essential that you have an EGT gauge so you dont melt your engine down.

You can find a used turbo on ebay, just ebay banks turbo or something along those lines. They will usually have a couple for an IDI.

A straight piped N/A IDI would be as loud as a straight piped big block gasser, way loud. It might be cool every once in a while to hear it, but if you had a daily commute of over say 10 minutes, I would think it would get very annoying.

I picked the truck up today, wow, i was surprised at the power and take off for not having a turbo. I suppose it could be the gearing, but my buddy did a burnout and a donut in my school parking lot. Not good though, not sure what my coworkers would think of that. Anyhow, just curious, but how does the injections sytem work in the 6.9, it's not the HEUI system is it? Is it all mechanical? It looks pretty simple to work on. Well, thanks for the input, please keep it coming. Just a thought, but could you run compund turbos on that motor? Not inline.

I would go for a new Hypermax considering what the used turbos sell for, also this engines don't really need 2 turbos but there are a couple people that have done it.

I have thought about fabricating a twin turbo set up with two smaller turbos for a faster spool up but I dont think it would be worth the trouble. If it were a newer engine or a way you could build the idi to take 20 or 30psi then it might be worth it. by the way what is the highest recommended for the idi, I have heard 10 and up to 15?

How do you configure the proper turbo for the right engines. I know several companies build them for the 6.9l, but can you fab your own headers, downpipe and all or is there some rules to follow there. I have access to a mandrel bender and thought maybe fabbing some of that stuff would be fun.

None of that silly, expensive HEUI garbage on these things. Just simple, reliable mechanical injection. System consists of lift pump, injection pump and injectors. Can't get much more simple than that.

That's awesome RLDSL, that is what I was after with this truck, something simpler than the PSD. I almost went early cummins for the simplicity, but I got it in a FORD now. Just couldn't get myself to go dodge.

I built my own exhaust manifolds, all turbo plumbing and mounting brackets. Lota calls to HYPERMAX for help designing exhaust manifolds and optimizing things for their pulse turbo. Check out my pix, link in sig. Fabbing all that stuff can be fun, but it can also be a major headache if you dont have all the skills tools time knowledge and money required. Whatever you decide HYPERMAX builds agood product and have execlent customer service

Better then being in a Ford, the motor's made by International Harvester! i think that's the smartest thing Ford's EVER done!!
